[VW 7.5] [Mac OS X] I can't get started...

Stew MacLean

Hi,

After getting my system running in runtime on Windows XP, I’ve being trying to get the VW 7.5 version going on Mac OS X.

When double clicking on the .app, my application just starts, appears briefly in the bar, then disappears (no windows open). I do the same thing with VW 7.4 runtime and the app opens, no problem.

I then tried doing the same thing with the base image copied to the Resources directory within a copy of the base directory structure, like so:

macx/

        visual.app/

            Contents/

                Info.plist

                PkgInfo

                MacOS/

                    visual

                Resources/

                    visual.im

The same thing happens, brief appearance of icon in the bar, then disappears.

Then I tried navigating to the Resources directory in Terminal, and executing open –a visual.app visual.im. Same thing. This is not the full development setup, but I would expect that the Transcript opens at least.

From the VW 7.4 runtime version that works log:

Darwin Anne-Johnstons-Computer.local 7.9.0 Darwin Kernel Version 7.9.0: Wed Mar 30 20:11:17 PST 2005; root:xnu/xnu-517.12.7.obj~1/RELEASE_PPC  Power Macintosh powerpc

Has anyone got any ideas as to what’s going on here? I tried the -? Command line option, but couldn’t get that to work either. Maybe there’s an option that will give me some logging?

Any help very much appreciated.

Cheers,

Stewart

Stewart,

I swear I was having this problem when I first installed 7.5 but for some reason I can't replicate it. The fix I remember doing was setting the correct path in my .bash_profile file. The line I had to put in was:

export VISUALWORKS=/Users/Sean/Applications/vw7.5nc

After changing the file I did a restart and it worked fine. I'm not sure if it was truly a fix or just a coincidence. Perhaps the restart was all it needed.

Hi Sean,

Thanks for the suggestion.

As it’s my friend’s computer, I haven’t had a chance to try it yet.

What’s strange is that I haven’t had to do this for VW 7.4 at runtime. I haven’t had to try the development image.

With VW 7.5 runtime, I would expect this to run without having to set any environment variables.

With VW 7.5 development, I would expect it to start, but not have access to the source – as the $VISUALWORKS environment variable is not set.

So I suspect it’s maybe something else. I notice that the VM sizes have changed considerably:

VW7.4 – 2986 kB          (…\VisualWorks 7.4.0\bin\macx\visual.app\Contents\MacOS\visual)

VW7.5 – 4115 kB

Looks like there’s been considerable change.

Interestingly, the VW7.5 intel version, is 2233 kB. (C…\VisualWorks 7.5.0\bin\macx86\visual.app\Contents\MacOS\visual)

Cheers,

Stewart
