[VW 7.5] [MacOS X 10.4.9] VM crash during startup, font initialization issue?

A friend of mine uses VW 7.5 on MacOS X. Until recently, he was able to
start an image by double clicking it. Somehow, this does not work any
more. He has not changed anything in the VisualWorks installation, and
the problem affects all images - the vanilla image from the
distribution, another image with Seaside which used to run without
problems, etc. He also told me that two other people have the same
problem on their Macs. He is not aware of any OS updates or software
installations which might influence the behavior.

The problem seems to be related to a font initialization problem, which
looks as if the VM hands an invalid FontDescription to a system library:

Does anyone have an idea what happened? And does anyone have an idea for
a workaround? My friends are not able to use VisualWorks at the moment,
and they would be more than grateful for any help.

When you say "crash", what exactly is happening?

I have so far, been unable to get VW 7.5 to work on Mac OS X 10.3.9 - an
icon just appears briefly in the task bar, then disappears - no log
(well there maybe one, I just don't know where to look), no crash
dialog, nada.

I'm running this on a friends computer. She has installed a lot of extra
fonts, so I'm wondering if maybe these problems are related?

I don't have first hand experience except seeing the error once when my
friend showed the non-starting VW to me a week ago. I don't remember if
an icon appeared on the task bar, or if the VW splash screen was shown.
After double clicking the image, no VW window appeared. I don't even
remember if the error log was shown in a dialog or if we had to look for
it elsewhere - it seems that my mid-term memory needs some training. ;-)

Just speculating without really knowing what I am talking about: We
might try to look for fonts which are kind of non-standard or corrupt.
Could modifications of font preferences at the OS level lead to this? Or
could it be related to ARs 51803 / 52232? I also found this on an Apple
mailing list
(http://lists.apple.com/archives/Student-dev/2004/Jul/msg00172.html):
"[NSFont fontWithName:@"Futura" size:fontSize] is returning nil. Make
sure that Futura is the Postscript name of the font, which is rarely the
same as the displayed name."

If I am not mistaken, these lines from the error log should make it
relatively easy to find the problem in the VM sources:
