I purchased my first Mac for home use (this past weekend) and tried to install Visual Works but wasn't successful. The machine is an Intel base iMac. I tried to use the Net Installer but got nothing (it ran for a moment and ended), then I tried downloading individual files and running it but all I got was an error message. Lastly I tried installing using the CD image. I ran the image from the Mac (didn't burn it to a CD) and got a little farther. I got an error message in Terminal but eventually a dialog box came up prompting me to open a file. I have no idea what file I'm supposed to open. I have no idea which is the right method and what I'm missing. Does there exist, anywhere on-line, complete and up to date installation instructions for VW
7.4.1? Or can someone who's been sucessful e-mail me with that I need to do? Thanks
Sorry about not having error message details but I'm writing this from work. Sean |

7.4.1 will work with the preview vm running under X11 on your intel
mac. There is no support for the aqua vm yet, the dev version is still unstable. To install, make sure that you have X11 installed ( from your mac osx disk one extras ). Then start X11 and in an X11 terminal, navigate to the cd and execute the installMacOSXPreview.command. This should launch the installer. Once installed, I launch the image by creating a script that I run under X11. This seems to work well for me. Then in X11 I can make a hotkey to run the script. So to launch VW I just launch X with quicksilver then launch VW with the shortcut. It's 2 keystrokes. I'm attaching my script. There have been a few updates to the X11 vm since 7.4.1 that you can get through the developer program. Hope this helps. Hi,
The problem with the shipped VM for Mac Intel is that you cannot use the Mac interface, but you have to use the terminal. As a solution to that, Lukas Renggli put together a bundle for Mac Intel. You can download it from here: http://www.iam.unibe.ch/~scg/Research/Moose/download/vw/visual-mac- intel-741d.app.zip I have announced this a while ago on the mailing list (see below). The only things you need is to set VISUALWORKS variable in the .bash_profile in your home folder, and to have X11 installed. Afterwards, just drag and drop the image on the VM.
