VWNC for Mac OS X not responding

James Longstreet
Hello,

Stupidly, I have a quite a bit of unsaved work in VisualWorks NC for
Mac OS X.  It has stopped responding to input completely -- I can
move windows, but nothing else.  I tried bringing up the Emergency
Evaluator with Shift-Ctrl-Y, but it does nothing.

Any ideas?

Thanks,
James Longstreet

Re: VWNC for Mac OS X not responding

Michael Lucas-Smith
Yes. You haven't lost a thing. Shut down the image ( kill it ) and
then open up your last saved image (even if it's an empty visual.im).

Then go to Tools > Change List.

Then in there, go to File > Recover Last Changes

From there, you can get back all your lost code using the Replay
features.

Cheers,
Michael

VWNC for Windows CE

Victor Metelitsa [cssc/zsavs/p2]
In reply to this post by James Longstreet
Hello All.

Can somebody tell me what I do wrong?
I am trying to start my very small application on my Fujitsu-Siemens Pocket LOOX 720 (128 ram, 640*480) but unsuccessfully. Why it can't load library? CE parsel is loaded.
I am using VWNC 7.4.1 for this application.

Re: VWNC for Windows CE

Elliot, I don't know about library and path. All of I know is attached error.log file in my first message. Windows on mobile devices is very dark forest for me. How I can see need information without command shell, regedit.exe etc ? ;-(.

I get standard VWNC development image. Than I load CE parcel, write very small application (one window, one button, one entry field ;-) ), stripe with Runtime Packager into visual.im, and test it. This application works with Windows 2003 and crashs with Windows CE. No messages, only blank window on screen and error.log file on filesystem root. (I see some strange behavior: occasionally error.log file appears in current catalog instead root).

Re: VWNC for Windows CE

Magnus Schwarz
The log shows that your app tries to switch to the ru message files in
the $Visualworks subdirectory and does not manage to resolve the value
of the system variable - maybe it would help (for a start) to put the
message file into the working directory (or a subdirectory) and change
this in the settings before transferring the image to the CE gadget...

Magnus

Hi Victor,

The error happens in line [24] of your stack dump:
>[18] WinNTSystemSupport(Win95SystemSupport)>>getVariableWithRoot:path:name:ifAbsent:
>[19] WinNTSystemSupport(Win95SystemSupport)>>getVariableWithPath:name:ifAbsent:
>[20] optimized [] in Win95SystemSupport>>getVariable:ifAbsent:

>[23] WinNTSystemSupport(OSSystemSupport)>>getVariable:
>[24] SystemUtils class>>getEnvironmentVariable:
>[25] SystemVariable>>value

SystemUtils class
        ^OSSystemSupport concreteClass new getVariable: varName

On a CE device OSSystemSupport concreteClass should respond with
WINCESystemSupport, but here it obviously responded with WinNTSystemSupport
because that is the receiver of getVariable:.

Since OSSystemSupport concreteClass is only the accessor for a shared variable,
the question is whether this shared variable was initialized incorrectly or was
not initialized yet. To find this out, change LocaleSystem>>setUp to:

setUp
        super setUp.
        ExternalInterface install.
        Locale platformHookup.

Re: VWNC for Windows CE

Thanks, Ralf!

With your and my fixes (because #platformName returns garbage) it works now
;-) ....
But it works with English locale only ;-(. Image crashs with Russian locale
because font problems.
But this is a big progress for me now.

Re: VWNC for Windows CE

Ralf Propach
Hi Victor,

so now you can print the result of
Screen default listFontNames.
Then we can try to find out which fonts with cyrillic characters you have
and which font VisualWorks tries to use with the Russian locale.

Re: VWNC for Windows CE

Victor Metelitsa [cssc/zsavs/p2]
Thanks, Ralph.

Tha code "Screen default listFontNames" gives me following list:

Courier New~0~400~0~0~0~ansi~4
Tahoma~0~400~0~0~0~ansi~4
Tahoma~0~700~0~0~0~ansi~4

This three fonts presents with English and with Russian locales. VM don't
report about any another fonts. But right Russian fonts must have
*~special204~* instead. When I set Russian locale in my PDA, my test image
can't find fonts with right locale and crashs. I attach another file with
trace now.

At next step I modify FontPolicy>>bestFont:allowance: method. Now it returns
first font when it can't find right. After this change my image don't crash
more. But I have not Russian characters on screen. I have garbage instead. I
think this is may be VM problem because I can't see right fonts in list.
