We have a headful server process that endorses some text onto the back
of a cheque image. That process has been running headful using VW 7.6 on
Windows for several years. We now want to run this process as headless
windows service and have encountered some issues with the endorsing
code. I've appended the full method showing what we are doing at the end
of the email, but the cruces of the problem is that in a HeadlessImage
"Mask extent" results in a DNU. This is because Screen default
defaultCoveragePolicy returns nil.

Doing some poking around we see that when running a headless a
HeadlessScreen is installed and is returned in response to "Screen
default". The headless screen is able to provide a defaultFontPolicy but
not a coverage policy. This seems to be because while Headless screen is
hard coded to return a HeadlessFontPolicy the paint policies are
installed in the instance side initialize method of HeadlessScreen, but
this method is never called as far as I can tell. The fix is not as
simple as calling initialize.

So my questions are:
1) Should I expect to be able to use the graphics system for image
manipulation in a headless image or do we need to go to using an
external image processing dll for this.
2) If VW can be used how? What we are trying to do is not that complex,
we simply want to put some text onto an BW image. The method showing
that we are doing is below.

=== here is what we are trying to do ====
endorse: string on: img at: offset
| gc mask text point |
point := ((img extent x * offset x) @ (img extent y * offset y))
rounded.
gc := ScreenGraphicsContext on: (Mask extent: img extent on:
HeadlessScreen default).
text := string asText.
text emphasizeAllWith: (Array with: #bold with: #pointSize -> 34).
text displayOn: gc at: point.
mask := gc medium asImage.
mask
copy: (0 @ 0 extent: mask extent)
from: 0 @ 0
in: mask
rule: 8.
mask palette: img palette.
img
copy: (0 @ 0 extent: mask extent)
from: 0 @ 0
in: mask
rule: RasterOp and.

I have been developing an application using vw7.10.1 and an Arduino Duo.
Everything works well so far.
In an attempt to move to vw8.2pul I have met with a problem.

The Arduino uses ports '/dev/ttyACM0' and '/dev/ttyS0'

To reproduce the problem:
WORKING
1 Arduino plugged into a USB .
2 Clean 7.10.1 image
3 Load Serial from Cincom public repository
4 inspect it:
UnixTtyAccessor hookupTo: OSHandle.CurrentPlatformID.
IOAccessor defaultForSerial open: '/dev/ttyACM0'

returns an active UnixRealTtyAccessor
4 inspect it:
UnixTtyAccessor hookupTo: OSHandle.CurrentPlatformID.
IOAccessor defaultForSerial open: '/dev/ttyACM0'

returns an OsIllegalOperation.

The closest I can get to the cause of the problem appears to be in the following method and <primitive: 655>.

UnixRealTtyAccessor class >>primOpen: aString errInto: anErrorHolder
"Answer an accessor on an opened named tty. The name should be

I requested to get a PUL/NC version of Cincom VisualWorks v8.2 one day ago and I'm still waiting for the email with the download link. It is not in the Spam folder.

Does it take this much?

I remember getting the email faster before, but the process seems to be more obfuscated now.

The implementation of Browse Implementors in a method source pane has an off by one error.

I typed the source for a method and before I saved it, I wanted to find out whether it should have been a class method or an instance method. So I highlighted a message send and browsed its implementors.

The source was:
extraAttributes

^super extraAttributes, #()

I highlighted the portion bolded (the super send).

The window that opened showed me implementors of #, instead.

If I highlight everything except the last letter (extraAttribute), the Browse Implementors does show me the implementors of #extraAttributes (with the "s").

This is under VW 8.1.1 and presumably running the Postgres parcel that shipped with it.

I received a DNU exception while PostgresSocketSession was executing
self error: 'Unexpected protocol state = ' , self protocolStateType

The error occurred because #protocolStateType answered nil.

There are two senders of #protocolStateType, namely PostgresSocketSession>>#hasAnswerSetExternal and SessionBasedResponse>>#isValid. The #isValid implementation recognizes that #protocolStateType may answer nil, since #allowedPriorStateTypes tend to include nil in their possibilities. #hasAnswerSetExternal is oblivious to this possibility.

(As much as I am reporting the DNU exception, I would be interested in knowing why execution of StoreLoginFactory class>>#setSessionToUnicode: went down the path of getting a nil for its protocol state and what I should do about it.)

Thank you.

With displays offering higher resolution, fixed fonts become smaller and smaller on the screen. On VW 8.1 I can change the editor fonts (good!), but not fonts associated with menus and tools, such as the 4 panes of the browser.

Has anyone figured out how to change these font sizes?

Hello.

I've checked through the posts and don't see anything addressing this issue. I am using Screen -> getExternalSelection to grab the clipboard content on one system so I can paste into my VW application on another system. I'm going from Windows -> Linux

This works fine - until the clipboard content reaches a certain size. If I look at the string returned I see the end portion of the string is all black rectangles. For the tests I've been doing it's happening at around the 262K element in the string that's returned.

I've done some tests taking one row of a spreadsheet, pasting, then taking 10 rows, pasting, etc. At some point as I increase the row size I eventually see the black rectangles.

Does anyone have any experience with this or alternate methods to take clipboard contents (ByteArray) and paste?

Thanks,

I'm hoping someone has seen this problem already!

I am loading pictures into a viewer:

tempFile := 'C:\temp.png') asFilename.
stream := tempFile writeStream binary.
stream nextPutAll: myImage.
stream close.
pic := (ImageReader fromFile: tempFile) image.
imageDict := Dictionary new.
pic bounds corner = (1 @ 1) ifTrue: [^self].
imageDict at: #createDate put: (each at: #createDate).
imageDict at: #createTime put: (each at: #createTime).
imageDict at: #image put: pic.
imageDict at: #origin put: 1 @ 1.
imageDict at: #color put: #white.
imageDict at: #box put: pic bounds.
imageList add: imageDict

This code works fine for jpg and png in Windows o/s. In Linux Red Hat 6.5 only the png's display, the jpg's are blank.

I've confirmed that:

ImageReader fromFile: tempFile is returning a JPEGImageReader and the pic is a Depth32 image, if I halt the code and inspect the pic in the Windows view and the Linux view the attributes are all the same.

The jpg's that don't show up in the Smalltalk view can be opened and viewed in Linux by other applications.

Any thoughts? I'm stumped.

Thanks!

Quick Background
Working on a making a VM that can run on Blackberry phones. The VM itself was created by someone else and my job now is to port the display primitives to Qt. So far we have all the graphics appearing for the small talk applications we are using.
The Problem/Question
I have run into an issue when it comes to objects that require user input. Take a button for instance. When the button is created on the screen it is not done by calling for a single primitive but instead is usually made from drawing several rectangles, inputting some text and so forth. When the button is drawn, there are no “responsive” features, instead it is just a pixmap. My knowledge in regards to the VM and small talk in general is rather limited so I had a few questions.
Is their supposed to be a mask generated as well that overlaps the pixmap to detect for button presses?
Or is the VM supposed to interpret buttons differently than other graphics?
The same thing happens for input fields. It draws the field and even the cursor that indicates you should input something, however they are drawn in a static pixmap and can’t be interacted with.

Hi Everyone,

I'm migrating SOAP web services working fine in VW7.10.1 to VW8.1. For the WSDL schema I had to replace HttpRequest with HttpContext for which I found information in the VW documentation. This works fine, I can read my WSDL schema from the browser. But SOAP communication between client and server is now failing. The client is getting aWebServices.ValidationError - 'Validation failed for: {ns:myRequest}. Value ''myString'' violates pattern restriction'

I was wondering if anyone managed to migrate their SOAP web services to VW8.1 successfully?

In former 7.x-versions of VisualWorks there was (in the "preview"
directory of the CD) this package. In version 7.10 it is vanished.

I think that the sparing scrollbars behavior (that you only see
scrollbars if you need it) is state of the art in modern GUIs, not
an unnecessary feature for freaks.
I don't know how it is solved in VW8.1...

Has anybody an idea how to change the former version to make it run
in 7.10.1? If one loads it normally as parcel or step by step from
the source file or from the store db, the image is running into an
infinite loop (cause someone DNU something and want to open the
debugger which seem to DNU something, too, and wants to open a
debugger...).

Or can you give me some hints how to solve this problem in another
way?
Our customers are annoyed about the old look of our "new" version of
our application.
Dear community,
I have just published in the Cincom Public Repository a small package
which I found very useful in the last time: The package
[Win32FileSystem] replaces and extends the current system implementation
for copying files on Windows. Using file system oriented library
functions of MS Windows it implements:
(1) Read/write access to file attributes
(2) Reimplementation of PCFilename>>copyTo:. The original implementation
effectively creates a new file with all source data transferred to the
new file. This approach is insufficient for file properties
(creation/modification timestamp etc.).
(3) Support of CopyFileEx() with copy progress callback.

Feel free to make use of it.
Holger Guhl

Remote terminal systems such as MS terminal services seem to have a
When my app reads HKCU it seems to get data which I dont expect.

Anyone know anything about this ...

There’s also UILooks-MacOSX106, which updates the Mac OSX look and feel to match Snow Leopard 10.6, e.g. no pinstripes (a change that VW itself made after 7.7.1). Most of this is the work of MetaCase’s Risto Pohjonen, but we’re releasing it under the MIT license in case it’s useful to others who are unable to upgrade to VW 8. It also solves the problem of VW running on Retina screens (it doesn’t use any bitmaps, which the VM incorrectly scales twice).

Attached is the difference between 7.7.1 base and with UILooks-MacOSX107 (plus MEMacOSXFont, MEMacOSXLucidaGrande, and Windows7LookPolicy for the tree view). tag:forum.world.st,2006:post-4837376more VW8.0.1 issues2015-07-13T12:50:24Z2015-07-13T12:50:24ZJohn Brant-2
I've found several more issues while using VW8.0.1 for a few days now.
These were observed on my windows machine.

*) If you hover over a package with a long name in the browser, it
displays the hover help with the full package name. Now, if you use the
scroll wheel, you can end up with blank package names. The icon is
displayed for the package, but the package name is missing.

*) Auto complete should complete to items that are valid. For example, I
defined a shared variable in a class named "MaxJumpSize". When typing
"Max" in a code pane, it wants to autocomplete to "MaxColumnConstraint".
That variable isn't defined in the class that I'm working on. After I
typed "MaxJ", it didn't recognize anything for the autocomplete. Here's
another example, I typed "[:each | each" and it wanted to autocomplete
to "[:each | eachCreatedChildDo:". A keyword cannot be the first thing
in a block.

*) In addition to the invalid auto-completions, there are times when I
don't understand what it is doing. For example, I have a class with an
instance variable "renameVariable". When I type "re" it wants to
complete to "renameVariable" -- that is what I expect. However, if I
type "ren", it switches to want to complete to "rename" which isn't a
valid variable name. If I want to autocomplete, I must continue typing
until I get to the "V" (i.e., "renameV"). Why did it switch the
auto-completion suggestion when the original suggestion was still valid?
In this case, I typed "re" and while I was typing "n" I also noticed
that the suggestion was valid so I hit tab, but it switched the
suggestion after the "n" was typed even though the original suggestion
was still valid.

*) If I position the text cursor with the mouse or keyboard (using the
arrows), then when I type a character it should insert that character no
matter what the next character is. Currently, if you position the text
cursor before a "]" and type a "]", it just moves the text cursor to the
next position without inserting a character.

*) Type "[" and hit backspace -- you are left with "]". If the editor is
"smart" enough to insert the closing bracket, it should be smart enough
to remove it when I deleted the original opening bracket.

*) Ctrl-Backspace in Windows should delete the previous word. I know
that VW hasn't had this in the past, but every other editor in Windows
has had it for 25 or so years now.

*) Click inside method and create a reference to OrderedCollection. If
your mouse is hoving over OrderedCollection, it displays
"Core.OrderedCollection" as the hover help. While this hover help is
displayed, you can't type anything in the method. It appears that the
character typed closes the hover help, but since the mouse is still over
the item, it immediately reopens the hover help. To type " new", I must
move the mouse.

*) Define a metaclass method that has a block with an argument named
"name". It displays a warning that the variable is redeclared and a
quick fix to "Remove redeclared variable name". If you do that, you end
up with "Syntax Error: Argument name expected". You can't remove a block
argument. The fix should be to rename the block argument.

*) Someone might want to look at the results of Package->Spawn->Non
Cincom Code. Evidently, nothing in my image is Cincom code as everything
is listed as "Non Cincom Code".

*) It is impossible to reset the break at count in the debugger when the
breakpoint is the first thing in the method. For example, insert a
breakpoint at the start of the method. The breakpoint gets inserted with
a break on first occurrence. The method is restarted causing the
breakpoint to fire and the occurrence count to be set to "0". If you
click "0" to set it to "1", it restarts the method, fires the breakpoint
again, and resets the occurrence count to "0" again. There doesn't
appear to be any way to get out of this loop in the debugger. I don't
understand why changing the iteration count would need to restart the
method. Isn't the breakpoint an object that you can change without
restarting a method?

*) How do I set conditional breakpoints? The old interface was clunky,
but workable. If you can still set them in the new interface, I have no
clue what to do. I've reverted back to inserting "self halt"s in the code.

*) When you have a copy buffer with a bunch of lines and bring up a
dialog that asks to enter a string, those lines are displayed in the
single line dialog. The lines are printed on top of each other, and it
isn't possible to select the whole string to delete all of the lines. I
have to close the dialog, copy some other text, and retry. I know this
bug has existing for a really long time, but it is really annoying when
it happens and it should have been fixed 20 some years ago.

John Brant
