Why OpenSmalltalk/vm not googlable and not searchable on GitHub?

Denis Kudriashov

Hi.

Maybe I am super stupid. But I just tried to find new GitHub repository for VM and I can't.
Of course I found it here but Google and GitHub not show me any results.
At least GitHub surprised me. Is anything correct with repo settings?

And another question. Is Travis build server public? Where to find it?

Searching for 'OpenSmalltalk' got me the GitHub repo as the 3rd result
with Google.  Since it's a new repo, perhaps it's still being added to
the indexes and/or propagating out through their infrastructure and/or
their algorithms are still deciding where it fits in the search
results?  GitHub can also take several days before new projects can be
found via their search.

Ok. I just checked that there is no incident option "not searchable"

ah ok i see now, actually you will get empty results in the search because github searches for repo first

openSmalltalk is not the name of a repo its the name of the user so you have to click to user and it will it to you

so its both found by google and github

Ahh. Thats quite an insight that I hadn't noticed before.  Also the
first 8 results searching github for "vm" are 8 different projects.
One of the reasons for moving to github is get more visibility.  I'm
afraid like this that we'll be lost in the noise.

Actually when I made my fork of the repo, I'd noticed the project
seemed to lose its identity as...
    https://github.com/bencoman/vm
but I didn't worry to much about it since "I" knew what it was.  But
confusion in the public arena on github is more serious.

Since its still quite early days on github, can I ask consideration be
given to renaming the repo so we have...
    https://github.com/OpenSmalltalk/opensmalltalk-vm
    https://github.com/bencoman/opensmalltalk-vm
That it will show up in both searches for "smalltalk" and "vm"
I think this is important to getting the most long term value out git & github.

Github help pages indicate existing infrastructure should continue to
work to the old name, easing the transition.
https://help.github.com/articles/renaming-a-repository/

For authorised users, this should link where the rename can be done..
https://github.com/OpenSmalltalk/vm/settings

Github wont give you automagically visibility, there 2 criteria you have to satisfy

1) you have to contribute some code in smalltalk so it appears as smalltalk
2) you have to add a sensible description that mentions smalltalk in some way

The VM satisfies neither of those 2 criteria hence its not visible as Smalltalk but it is visible as C project.

By the way if you want find smalltalk projects , enter the words relevant to your search and then add

 language:Smalltalk

this will force to Github to search projects that either contain Smalltalk source files or that mention in the description

you can also use the explore feature of github to see which Smalltalk projects are trending

https://github.com/trending/smalltalk

So as you can see yes the visibility is crystal clear for those that want to find Smalltalk projects.

Its easy, its simple and its fast.

If OpenSmalltalk/opensmalltalk-vm is considered too unwieldly,
some alternatives could be:
* OpenSmalltalk/osvm  (this has a single conflicting exact match on github [last updated 4 years ago], and a four substring matches)
* OpenSmalltalk/ostvm (for which github return no results)

The reason I suggest this is the old real estate adage "location, location, location"
has a corollary these days with internet search of "uniqueness, uniqueness, uniqueness".
Then again, its only a small thing and there is plenty of other important things to do.

Hi all,

We have just renamed the repository to "opensmalltalk-vm".
Please update your local Git repositories with the following:

or if you are using ssh:

git remote set-url origin [hidden email]

GitHub has a sophisticated redirection system and should be able to redirect all requests to the old repository automatically for the foreseeable future. We still recommend to update your clones as soon as possible.

Best,
Fabio

So for those of us attempting to make sense of this within the recommended ‘SourceTree’ I think this must be
a) Repository Settings -> tab ‘remotes’
b) click on ‘origin’ ^ ‘Edit’
c) change https://github.com/OpenSmalltalk/vm.git to https://github.com/OpenSmalltalk/opensmalltalk-vm.git

Yes?
