Hi, i am pretty new to Visualworks. I have bean reading with some
interest about the new Widgetry framework, and am going to check it out. I really like the idea of easily customizing and creating new UI widgets. Have been perusing the web casts about this. I have a couple of questions: 1) What was so wrong with Pollock (sp?) that required a complete rewrite? 2) How far away is the GUI Painter/Builder tool for Widgetry? all the examples I have seen so far are scripted creation of the UI . 3) Have any apps been shipped using Widgetry that can be downloaded and played with? I downloaded Bottom Feeder but it looked very bad on Mac OS X. Particularly the font rendering in menus and buttons. Does Bottom Feeder use Pollock or Widgetry? Thanks, Alex Rice |
Pollock is the old name for Widgetry. BottomFeeder doesn't so much look bad
on Mac as VW looks bad on Mac right now - we are addressing that. Bf is written in the existing GUI toolset, sometimes called Wrapper. At present, there is no schedule or plan to build a GUI builder for Widgetry. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Alex Rice" <[hidden email]> To: <[hidden email]> Sent: Wednesday, September 05, 2007 6:13 PM Subject: Widgetry questions > Hi, i am pretty new to Visualworks. If you don't plan on building a GUI builder for Widgetry how do plan on replacing Wrapper? Steve PS For those who don't know the history: VisualWorks 1.0 was released in 1992, adding a GUI builder as its major new feature compared to its predecessor, ObjectWorks 4.1. For a good description of how frameworks evolve from bits of resuable code into visual builders and tools, see Don Roberts and Ralph Johnson's work: http://chip.cs.uiuc.edu/~droberts/evolve.html |

WHAT!!?? And what do we tell our existing customers, Jim? This is a
giant step *Backwards*. Chris James Robertson wrote: > Pollock is the old name for Widgetry. We are in the process of making decisions on the future of the VW UI right
now. What I said below doesn't mean that there won't be better tools coming; what it means is that at the moment, we have not made a final decision on what the path forward looks like. We should have something more definitive to say within a few days - this isn't something that will stay fuzzy for long. What I can say is that improvements will not take <years> to arrive. Going forward, you'll see a lot more continuous improvement, and a lot less in the way of 10 year plans. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Chris Winemiller" <[hidden email]> To: <[hidden email]> Sent: Thursday, September 06, 2007 8:30 AM Subject: Re: Widgetry questions > WHAT!!?? From the few experience I have with Widgetry I don’t quite see how a builder spec interface could be as flexible and easy to manipulate as the current scripting version, although you can certainly see that it is all designed with this in mind.
Don't most of us prefer To what I experience Widgetry is currently all about throwing code out and making simple things a little bit more complicated but complicated things a lot easier. There is no way that I'll go back to wrapper, I rather rebuild quickly then maintain the old graphical. If there is anything to vote then that would be better OS integration and a true Vista / Leopard Look based on Of course that is all personnel. @+Maarten,
