Work with VisualWorks 2.5 files

laura
Hi all,

I need to work with files made on VisualWorks 2.5. I'm on Win7. I have not used VW before. Which software do i have to use?

Best,
Laura

VW 2.5 is a very old version of VisualWorks.  The latest release is
8.0.1.  (From memory, 2.5 was superceded by 3.0 toward the end of the '90s.)

VisualWorks is provided by Cincom.  Visit www.cincomsmalltalk.com to see
how to get current and/or older releases.

To load your files into a recent release, you will need to load the
utility parcel FileIn30 which (as its name suggests) lets code from VW
3.0 and earlier be loaded into VisualWorks 7.* and later.  However the
product has evolved over the last two decades and porting work could be
required (in which case a version 3.1, in which you could load and study
the code, might be useful).  Something that worked in VW 2.5 should load
(and probably run out-of-the-box) in a 3.1d installation (the last of
the 3 series IIRC) but while I know 3.1 ran fine on XP I cannot answer
for win7.  In any case, if your task is to restore an old app to
usefulness, I do _not_ recommend using 3 as anything beyond a means to
study the code and resolve any file-in hiccough you experience in a
later release.

A Smalltalk user group near you could be useful to you.  (The European
Smalltalk User Group holds its annual conference in Brescia very soon -
see www.esug.org - and there will be Camp Smalltalk there on the weekend
before.  IIRC, there is another Camp Smalltalk in Portland in August.
And other meetups in various locations from time to time.)

             HTH

My task is indeed to update/remake an old app. I've been able without trouble to file-in the VW2.5 files into my current version. That mostly solves my problem.
Thank you :)
