You might not need jQuery

I think it is still useful (we still want to run on IE8, at least for a while).
But I would really like to step to modern browsers in the future,
though I would not abandon jQuery-like library - I would just either
upgrade to jQuery 2 (which is aimed at modern browsers only and is lighter)
or to zepto (which is even lighter).

There will always be browser incompatibilities - though they will be less drastic, probably, so this kind of library would be lighter.

This is just browsers slowly converging to something reasonable
