This is with the code from arch, but I get the same with the 2.3.6
release.

aclocal complains about missing sigsegv/m4 directory:

ouch :-)  I guess it compiled here only because the function was
inlined, or something like that.  Anyway I committed a patch to turn
the "gcc_assert" into "assert".

Now we should be back at some failure building the image...
