I recall that when we asked Takashi about the status of parts 2 and 3 of his popular "Demon Castle" tutorial, he said that while part 2 had issues, part 3 ought to be good to go as is. I just tried it out in RC1 and it seems fine… perhaps it should be included in the release?

What are the issues on part 2? Maybe we can fix them...

I think the issue is that it uses the EventRecorder and that the color picker is not recorded as it should

I'll try and get Etoys Challenge 2 running in Etoys 5.0 and let you know if I see any issues.

Demon Castle 3, has a page where it asks: "This scriptor includes two sets of tiles. Guess what the key will do before you click the clock button." and it includes a forward and turn tiles. Page shown below:
One idea would be to ask folks to use Richo's new step debugger a few times first, then guess what it does. This would get them introduced to the new tool and perhaps at least get them started on thinking through scripts one tile at a time. What folks think?
Also the page that explains the different parts of a scriptor (shown below) we should add Richo's single step debugger icon and fix the arrows. In the following page when you get the script wrong (use turn by 5) and the key hits the skull, it "laughs at you" at least that was my impression (but I'm overly sensitive to criticism, which will being able to look for and accept honest well meaning criticism is a good thing, there may be other small children who could get turned off by the laughter). Perhaps another less "judgmental" sound, "splash" or "warble"?
There are also some pages where the text is covered by the scriptor, this would need to be fixed. My guess is the scaling somehow changed between when this was created and how it is now rendered.
Last question is for Kathleen (well really for Takashi as he created these and they are in beautifully done) The background around the book is "gray" and the last two pages are different colors. Should we change the World's color?
Thanks, Stephen FYI: The original Demon Castle files are here and pictures of each page are here On Wed, Mar 21, 2012 at 9:06 PM, Steve Thomas <[hidden email]> wrote: Good, news, SQ-998 does not seem to be a problem in Etoys 5.0 (thanks to Karl and Derek for the fix). _______________________________________________ etoys-dev mailing list [hidden email] http://lists.squeakland.org/mailman/listinfo/etoys-dev |
Okay, last one on this topic for tonight. The Etoy's Castle (1,2 and 3) and Etoy's Challenge are in English only.
Should we look at making these translatable? Only possible challenge is in ensuring when switching languages the "layout" is okay (all word's visible, nothing covering up anything else, etc).
Thanks, Stephen

Only thing left to be done is to "re-create" the Event Theater "show" where Mimi's face is drawn.
Bad news, I can't draw :(
Kathleen,
I have attached an updated version of the the Etoy's Castle 2 (we changed the name from Demon Castle in 4.0). Can you create an "Event Theatre" that draws Mimi's face as shown on page 5? The page to do it on is the one the project opens to, with the
text "Oh, friend... My face has been erased by the evil demon!"
Only other issue is the Sugar Navigator Flap "renders differently" (open in Etoys 5.0 and you will see).
I tried copying the book to another project via the Supplies flap, which fixes the Navigator Flap issue, but the book's "size" shrinks when I do this.

I see that it has some weird scaling and the #mouseOverHalos preference on (which is very annoying). I don't know how to fix that. I tried to export just the BookMorph into a file to load it in Etoys 5 but I get an error, and debugging is not very enjoyable when you're tired at night :).
Maybe the easiest thing to do would be to remake it on Etoys 5 (reusing the images and stuff). I can do it tomorrow if you wish, and I can give it a shot at drawing the face. Cheers, Richo

Hi Richo,
Okay, I am glad you see a way. I was trying last night and not getting reliable drawings. I would draw in brown and the ''play" would be black. Shall I try an animation this morning to see if that works better? Kathleen From: Ricardo Moran [[hidden email]]

Part of the challenge of realiable playback (including colors) is moving the mouse slowly and in the case of colors moving slightly and slowly before picking the color. I am guessing this has to do with the way the Theatre samples.
This could work, but even if you get the Event Theatre just right, there is the potential of problems occuring if for whatever reason they move the paint box at some point while Etoys is open (at least I think this is a potential problem I seem to recall it happening to me once or twice).

Hi Richo,
The attachment is an animation drawing a cat face. If it is useful, use it; if it is redundant, toss it away. Kathleen From: [hidden email] [[hidden email]] on behalf of Steve Thomas [[hidden email]]

Hi,
I like it very much! What I did (and just finished) is *a lot* more complicated, and I'm sorry to say it's unnecesary and makes the project too big (find here: http://dl.dropbox.com/u/43706148/EtoysCastle2.039.pr). Silly me, I forgot how easy one can make an animation in Etoys :)
So I'm going to use your animation but I'll try to polish it a little, if you don't mind. Thanks, Richo On Fri, Mar 23, 2012 at 10:42 AM, Harness, Kathleen <[hidden email]> wrote:
