drawing rubberband lines

Since Screen>>displayShape is broken (at least on Mac OS X), I am
looking for an alternative.
My immediate goal is to rubberband a line by dragging the mouse in a
view. Rubberbanding rectangles might be nice.
I am sure some of you have thought of many, please post your solution here.
