fileOut and fileIn

Paolo Montrasi
I am a beginner and at the moment I am looking at squeak and free dolphin. I
am writing some examples joust to become more familiar with smalltalk, then
I tried to fileOut from squeak and fileIn into dolphin but I get in many
problems, the same happen from dolphin to squeak.
How can export/import code in a product independent way? I guess should be
some tools, where can I find them?

thanks

Paolo

You need an implementation of the Smalltalk Interchange Format (SIF) for
both Dolphin and Squeak.  I've used them between Squeak 3.0 and Dolphin 4.x,
but, haven't tried it with more recent versions.  D5 changes a few things
that might have broken the D4 SIF; I'm not sure if the SIF was ever released
for Dolphin 2.x.  Testing and fixing anything that turns up in Squeak 3.2
and D5 is on my list of things to do, but, not at a very high priority at
the moment.  Hopefully the original authors are busy working on new
versions.

Have a good one,

Bill

Eric Arsenau (sorry for spelling) has an implenentation 2.0
of SIF for Dolphin, Squeak, VW, VAST, and others.  He was pretty busy
a while back but is now moving his SIF stuff from the PocketSmalltalk
site to SourceForge, I think.

I enhanced his 2.0 (mine 3.0), and would be happy to help, but I have
no computer for a while.

If Bill has made the SIF stuff I sent available, you might get that
and try to get it working on the versions.  This may be a little too
diffacult if you are just starting out in Smalltalk.

On the other hand, it would be a great learning experience if you got
them working or not.
