What will be the impact if any of the new iphone rule..: "3.3.1--Applications may only use Documented APIs in the manner prescribed by Apple and must not use or call any private APIs. Applications must be originally written in Objective-C, C, C++, or JavaScript as executed by the iPhone OS WebKit engine, and only code written in C, C++, and Objective-C may compile and directly link against the Documented APIs (e.g., Applications that link to Documented APIs through an intermediary translation or compatibility layer or tool are prohibited)." Rules out Smalltalk...? Not intended but I guess in the tiff between the heavy weights.. its collateral effects...! _______________________________________________ vwnc mailing list [hidden email] http://lists.cs.uiuc.edu/mailman/listinfo/vwnc |
Hi
I really think that we should react as a community. And ask a boycott of iphone and ipod. Scratch was removed from the app store today because of that fucking change. If by "community" you mean Smalltalkers, I don't think Apple will notice...

But does this not then ban nearly everything written in Core Java/ or any Java, C#, .Net, python, ruby, and the whole lot of languages and platforms...!..
This is surely suicidal for Apple I guess...purely from a reactionary fall out of the community of developers.. I am sure core Mac developers would also not like this policy.. If they have an issue with flash or adobe tools, there are more ways than policy limitations to stop it from being functional. a* I am note even sure if this comes under the purview of monopolistic practices, that itself should see it legally contestible.. Then in that case we can also suicide.
I think that we have web sites and this is what counts. I think a mass suicide of Smalltalkers is a bit extreme, but that's
something Apple would probably notice. I don't, however, recommend it
as a course of action. Maybe we could choose something a bit less
painful :-).

I think Apple is well aware of the fact that few developers might be
upset (some for good reason and some just because). They are also well aware that developers wanting to sell stuff in their ecosystem have 2 choices: play by the rules or don't play at all. If BMW changes their rim design tomorrow, as much as Bridgestones of this world might complain, they'll adjust their designs and manufacturing processes simply because they are in business of selling tires. Nonetheless, it makes sense to continue the dialog with Apple if possible, but not by threatening, but by reasoning as former approach never seems to work for some strange reason.
