spam

Avi Bryant-2
Is anyone else seeing an unbelievable amount of spam on the seaside
and seaside-dev lists?  It may just be me, but very little of it gets
filtered out (compared to my inbox where it nearly all does).  I can't
figure out what settings I need to change to solve this - afaict,
we're already only accepting messages from registered members, which
the spammers obviously aren't...

I don't get any spam on any of the Smalltalk lists, except the occasional
online degree spam from the LASTUG list. I don't have any other filters,
either. (?)

You're the admin ... but it should not really get through to you, you
should just get a notice from mailman. I think you can disable those.

Many spam messages are sent to both the list address and the list admin
alias. Since the admin messages usually are filtered together with the
list messages, they look like standard messages from the list itself.

All the addresses on lists.squeakfoundation.org have been recently
harvested by some spammers (The summer of code mailing list was getting
more than 100 requests per day!).

Avi, if you want to discard all messages from nonmembers, just go to
Privacy options...->Sender Filters and set the generic_nonmember_action
to "Discard" (as Ken Causey) suggested on squeak-dev. I suggest applying
this solution only to the seaside-dev mailing list, though.

        Ciao,

                Giovanni

It had been set to Reject - why is Discard better?  (I assume the
difference is whether the sender gets notified of the problem?)

Exactly, and since the sender of a spam message is usually bogus, most
of the time the only result is that someone gets a notification about a
message he didn't send.

Ok, it is indeed just me - although the "To:" is
[hidden email], the "Delivered-To:" on these spam
messages is list-seaside-owner@ .  Naturally, GMail has no way to
filter by that header... :(
