Hi,
I recently installed VW 7.5 on an Intel Mac. It is great to have the native VM working. From the first look I particularly like the Comment icon. But, I did encounter a small annoying thing. When mounting the VW 7.5 ISO, I got a bit of a scary message :) : "The disk image you are opening may be damaged and could damage your system." (see attached picture) I tried it on two different Macs (an Intel and a PowerPC) and got the same message. I do not know what the problem is, but this is certainly not what newcomers to VisualWorks should see. Cheers, Tudor Picture 1.png (65K) Download Attachment |
This is something Apple did in the 10.4.9 operating system
upgrade, just before the 7.5 release. They put in warnings that report a
number of valid disk images as corrupt, including ours. This appears to
be overzealousness on Apple's part, and to date we haven't found any way
of creating a disk image mountable on multiple platforms that they won't
complain about. We have been using something called CDEverywhere, but
mkisofs has exactly the same problem.
There is supposed to be large and prominent text in the download page warning you about this. If there isn't, it's Jim's Robertson's fault :-) Or perhaps it isn't prominent enough. We are examining what we might be able to do about this for future releases e.g. make you download something completely different for MacOS X. Or possibly for MacOS 9, if accomodating that filesystem is actually what's causing the problem. At 01:48 PM 4/28/2007, Tudor Girba wrote: Hi, --

Hi
I also installed VW 7.5 on a Mac (10.4.9, PowerPC G4, actually an Aluminum PowerBook) and did NOT witness this warning dialog... so maybe the image is just picky... Mike |
