vw 7.7.0 image with vw 7.7.1 virtual machine

Stefaan Denolf

Hi,

I would like to ship the virtual machine of vw 7.7.1 with an image of vw 7.7.0, because it fixes an issue reported by our customer.

Does anyone know if the virtual machine of vw 7.7.1 is backwards compatible with the virtual machine of vw 7.7.0?

Thanks in advance

Stefaan

MS SQL Store and VW 7.2.1

Linh Dinh

Hi,

When we attempt to publish our VW 7.2.1 codes to Store after making a successful connection to it, we received an error dialog stating “The database connection is lost.” immediately after clicking the publish button and in the workspace it displayed “[Microsoft][ODBC SQL Server Driver]Invalid character value for cast specification.”

What is odd is we don’t seem to have any problem publishing with VW 7.6 nor VW 7.7.  And the last known time that we're able to publish with VW 7.2.1 was a couple of months ago.

The Microsoft error suggested we've a field/column that can't be converted.  How do we go about tracking down the field/column in our image that is preventing us to publish?  Any suggestion on how to resolve our VW 7.2.1 publishing issue would be much appreciated.

Thanks,

Linh

Generally speaking, VMs of the same major release as the image are
backwards compatible.  Thus, a 7.7.1 VM should run a 7.7 image.  For the
sake of completeness, if you go back *many* releases and try running a
7.1 image on a 7.7.1 VM, you may need an image patch to fix some bug
that breaks compatibility.  I do not think you should have a problem
with what you're trying to do, though.

Hi,

For some odd reason, if we turn the system clock on our workstation back before Aug. 21, 2010, we’re able to publish with VW 7.2.1.

Is there an update to VW 7.2.1 that we need to apply to get it to publish with the current date?

Thanks,

Linh

That version is well out of support - have you looked at upgrading?

When you see the dialog, hit control-Y. Then scroll down in the debugger until you find where the original error occured. It typically should still be in the stack. The error suggests that in 7.2.1 it is using an encoding which is not capable of encoding some character which you are using. So my first guess would be that you've introduced a character which isn't encodable there, and that later versions are using a different encoding. For example, a Euro character, which is not available in older encodings. That wouldn't explain, however, why changing the date on the computer would affect it.
