[vw7.4] error starting image on Slax linux from a pen drive

Am attempting to start VW7.4 image in Slax v5.1.6 (a derivative of Slackware 10.2)
www.slax.org

The herald comes up but in the terminal the
message
Error: Attempted external call prior to initialization
VisualWorks (R) 7.4 Nov 22 2005
is repeated till
src/mman/mmScanvenge.c 2370
Out of memory

any ideas? 

Ok,  I went to the Slax.org site and downloaded another module containing fix width fonts then tried vw74 again.  It started up.

That error message is fairly general. It means that the system has tried to do something with an external resource 
before the system is ready to allow it. However, it often happens as a secondary effect. So, you get an error relatively 
early in startup, it tries to either log to a file, or stdout, or to open a debugger window, but is unable to use those 
resource yet.

To try and isolate it, you might try running it -nogui, which will prevent it trying to do graphical operations, and 
might result in a useful log into stdout.
