vw74 startup problem

Ricardo Birmann
Hi everyone,

I've recently downloaded and installed VW7.4 and have been trying to use it without success.

I am under Linux (kernel 2.6.14) and my window manager is enlightenment 0.16. I am using the provided script (VisualNC) to start the visualnc.im image file... the splash screen comes out and my cpu goes up to 100%, but visual work does not start, the process just keeps on consuming memory and cpu indefinitely.

I understand this is not much info, but I don't where to find anything else that helps pin pointing the problem..... any suggestion??

Hoping to fix this soon,

Thanks a lot in advance for any thoughts that might help,

Ricardo Birmann

1) At the bottom of the "Download Cincom Smalltalk
Non-Commercial" webpage there's a link to
"Installation Troubleshooting help".

Which includes: "Issue: Out of memory error when
starting the install image under Linux"

(It would help to have that information somewhere that
doesn't require a user login)

2) You'll find more information in the archives of
this mailing list
http://www.parcplace.net/lists/vwnc-archive

Specifically

best wishes, Isaac

Re: vw74 startup problem

Ricardo Birmann
Thanks for your reply Isaac, but I don't seem to be having a memory problem.

From the troubleshooting page:

"Issue: Out of memory error when starting the install image under Linux

This may be a problem with too many fonts.

To verify this, execute the following in a shell:

xlsfonts | grep "^-" | wc

If the first number of the result is close to or greater than 5000, fonts are probably exhasting a system memory resource."

I am not even near 5000 (I am at work now and dont remember the exact number, but it was somewhere around 2500)

I am guessing my visualnc.im image is corrupt, because the virtual machine launches just fine with the installation image (install.im)... too bad I dont have any other images. Can a basic 7.4 image be downloaded from anywhere??

regards,

Ricardo Birmann

Ricardo, you can find references to symptoms similair
to what you've describe by following back from the
