[vwnc] [7.6] Source panes of the merge Tool

Holger Kleinsorgen-4
Hello,

the layout of the panes of the new merge tool are a bit confusing:

- the version selection list is on the upper right side
- the source code corresponding to the selection is on the lower left side

IMHO the left and right source pane should be swapped.

For reviewing extensive modifications, it would be useful to show all
three relevant versions (base, image, merged) simultaneously.

In your original post of 8/8/2008 you wrote:

IMHO the left and right source pane should be swapped.

The standard convention in the rest of the source comparison tools is "What Will Be" on the left, and "What Is" on the right, so swapping the Merge Tool code panes would make it inconsistent with the rest of the code-comparison tools in the system.

Your suggestion of having 3 code panes is interesting but right now our primary focus is on making things correct, robust, and speedy.  This is going to occupy most of our time for the foreseeable future.  This particular UI (Merge Tool) might get a face lift in the future but that's not a promise.

We'll keep the 3-pane thing on the suggestions list, and thank you for sharing the benefits of your experience using the tool.

Best,
David C'
