Re: [vwnc] [7.6]

Andres Valloud-4
If you are using Windows (I assume you are because of the error,
WSAECONNRESET), then the 7.6c VMs have several socket fixes compared to
the 7.6 VMs.  In addition, 7.7's sockets are also thread safe (although
this wouldn't be a problem for you if only one Smalltalk thread uses a
socket at the same time).

Good question!

It used to be easily located on a 'patches' web page. Nowadays it seems
to be well hidden inside the 'Cincom Resolution Portal' script.

See if this url will work for you:

http://www.cincomsmalltalk.com/ResolutionsApplication/CincomResolutionsPortal?_s=XcFSaecNIqAmFmSS&_k=njXdXuaj

If not then surf to the 'Resolution Center' and look for resolution
number 96169 (which is also announced on the main resolutions page for
VisualWorks, the page where you can choose the VW version number).

Note to Cincom:
since resolutions are no longer plain html files but require a
session, it seems search engines do not pick up their content any more.
In the past we also had human readable URLs for this kind of content,
now it seems even the Cincom web pages stopped linking into this content!
It seems that moving this info into a script has made it less accessible.

That's good to hear.

Another thing what would help in a big way at my end would be an rss
feed on the published patches and any updates to them.
(Which makes me wonder whether it wouldn't be advantageous to 'simply'
move the resolution portal to your blog server software, we'll get
restful urls and rss 'for free'. Having a comment option on patches
sounds interesting too ;-)

Thanks,

Why not aggregate everything related to Cincom Smalltalk (or even
Cincom in general) under the hood of a single well-structured and
coherently designed website based on Seaside? This would greatly
improve maintainability and simplify the integration of such service
features.

This would also focus the public perception, which is currently
distracted and dilluted by many fragmented communication islands. At
the same time this is a nice commitment to and demonstration of the
technology.

The 'Resolution Portal' *is* a demonstration of Seaside, and we were
pointing out how it fails (in usability and thus perception).

It seems the blog server software is better aligned with usability
expectations when it comes down to resolutions.

This is the old saw about porting: why create new software on the next
'silver bullet' framework when a solution is already available (on
Cincom Smalltalk no less).
