[vwnc] GemStone Enumeration Performance

Paul Baumann
Anyone interested in GS/S collection enumeration performance should check out the presentation and code in the post http://www.visualworksforums.org/index.php?topic=27.0.

With GS/S there is a big performance difference between ComplexBlock and SimpleBlock closures. Other languages that use closures may have similar differences, but to less of a degree. This shows the problem and gives techniques to improve performance.

Sorry, it isn't a trick that I'd known about when posting there. I'll send the presentation by email if asked. The file could be hosted elsewhere if the login is a big deal.

Isnt SMF customizable as to allow access to the attachments without
being logged on?

Re: [vwnc] GemStone Enumeration Performance

I'm in discussion with Charles to get that setting changed. The restriction had been intended. I've given an opinion that it doesn't help anyone. Hopefully he'll change his mind. It is a new forum Charles is trying to get started. I used to post things like this on sourceforge. I suppose I could put this on there too but I wanted to help the new forum get some visibility.

Hi Paul,

I'm afraid I still don't see any way to get to the attachments. How are
they accessed?

Re: [vwnc] GemStone Enumeration Performance

You should be able to see the presentation now without registering, but I'm told you won't even see the attachments without registering. I can see and download the attachments fine so I'm not sure what to say except to try registering if you haven't already done so. I'll send the files to you in a separate email in just a second. I'll also forward your response to Charles who runs that forum.

One other person has reported that they weren't able to see the presentation embedded in the posting, but that seems like a different issue from not being able to get the attachments at all. The viewing problem might have something more to do with the Acrobat plugin version being used or the way PrimoPDF generated the PDF that I published.

Got the other email w/files. Thanks! This looks like very nice work.

Ah, it's supposed to be embedded. I did notice a large amount of blank
space below your post and before the first reply. Upon closer
examination that blank space has a very slightly different background
color than the rest of the page.

Looking at the HTML I see this:

<object width="600" height="650"
data="http://www.visualworksforums.org/uploads/EfficientGemstoneEnumeration.pdf"
type="application/pdf"/>

which is clearly supposed to be the presentation.
When I go to the URL listed, I get the presentation just fine; it just
doesn't embed for some reason.

This may not be worth debugging, but if anyone's interested, I'm running
AMD64 Gentoo Linux, Firefox 3.0.8, Adobe Reader 8.0 plugin.

Regards,

-Martin
