Hello,
I'm a CS student in master at University of Montreal and I need to use VW for a project... I have a little trouble with the installation : I'm using Linux (Gentoo 2007.0, up to date) and I'm trying to install VisualWorks 7.6 (with ObjectStudio 8)... but : The Net Installer said it couldn't access to the server and just quit, but I don't have any problem with my Internet connection (I've tried to run it at home and at the University). The CD-based Installer said it doesn't have Execute Permission on some file on the CD ( /vw7.5nc/bin/linux86/visual ) even if I run the installer as root... I've tried to look on the Wiki, but I have a timeout when I try to load the web page. Does anyone has an idea about this please ? Thanks in advance, Mathieu Lemoine. _______________________________________________ vwnc mailing list [hidden email] http://lists.cs.uiuc.edu/mailman/listinfo/vwnc |

The server will probably be set up around the time it gets released. > The CD-based Installer said it doesn't have Execute Permission on some > file on the CD ( /vw7.5nc/bin/linux86/visual ) even if I run the > installer as root... Make sure the CD is mounted with execute permissions, by default these are off for removable media. I'm really surprised about that, because I just downloaded it from there : http://www.cincomsmalltalk.com/scripts/CommunityDownloadPage.ssp and the access is totally public...On Mar 16, 2008, at 8:00 PM, Mathieu Lemoine wrote:I'm using Linux (Gentoo 2007.0, up to date) and I'm trying to install VisualWorks 7.6 (with ObjectStudio 8)... but : The Net Installer said it couldn't access to the server and just quit,VW 7.6 has not been officially released yet, the copy you have might be covered by a non-disclosure agreement; you might want to verify that with whomever you got it from. I've done that already, but it didn't change anything (remount with `-o exec` and check about the noexec flag with `mount`)...The CD-based Installer said it doesn't have Execute Permission on some file on the CD ( /vw7.5nc/bin/linux86/visual ) even if I run the installer as root...Make sure the CD is mounted with execute permissions, by default these are off for removable media. We are both confused, note the version numbers: >>> VisualWorks 7.6 (with ObjectStudio 8)... but : >>> file on the CD ( /vw7.5nc/bin/linux86/visual ) even if I run the >>> >> Make sure the CD is mounted with execute permissions, by default >> these >> are off for removable media. >> > I've done that already, but it didn't change anything (remount with > `-o exec` and check about the noexec flag with `mount`)... > Strange, since you downloaded it do you have the .iso file on your Linux box? You might try mounting that instead of a CD. Otherwise I'm out of ideas... Good to hear you are up 'n running :-) In case you decide to upgrade to 7.6 (available real soon now) make sure you install it in a directory /separate/ from 7.5 (the installer will suggest to overwrite 7.5 ). If you decide to do serious development with VW I suggest you use the 'Store' SCM from the start (see the documentation for installation instructions). Enjoy!
