[vwnc] Problem installing VW 7.6

Mathieu Lemoine
Hello,

I'm a CS student in master at University of Montreal and I need to use
VW for a project...

I have a little trouble with the installation :

I'm using Linux (Gentoo 2007.0, up to date) and I'm trying to install
VisualWorks 7.6 (with ObjectStudio 8)... but :
The Net Installer said it couldn't access to the server and just quit,
but I don't have any problem with my Internet connection (I've tried to
run it at home and at the University).
The CD-based Installer said it doesn't have Execute Permission on some
file on the CD ( /vw7.5nc/bin/linux86/visual ) even if I run the
installer as root...

I've tried to look on the Wiki, but I have a timeout when I try to load
the web page.

Does anyone has an idea about this please ?

Thanks in advance,
Mathieu Lemoine.

VW 7.6 has not been officially released yet, the copy you have might
be covered by a non-disclosure agreement; you might want to verify
that with whomever you got it from.

The server will probably be set up around the time it gets released.

Make sure the CD is mounted with execute permissions, by default these
are off for removable media.

I'm really surprised about that, because I just downloaded it from there : http://www.cincomsmalltalk.com/scripts/CommunityDownloadPage.ssp and the access is totally public...
If it's not the version I should be using, please tell me...

I've done that already, but it didn't change anything (remount with `-o exec` and check about the noexec flag with `mount`)...

We are both confused, note the version numbers:

Strange, since you downloaded it do you have the .iso file on your
Linux box?
You might try mounting that instead of a CD. Otherwise I'm out of
ideas...

I've been able to run the installer with the last trick (mount the iso
image instead of the CD itself), and it worked...
Thanks a lot!

Yeah, I've noticed it too, but on the webpage, it's actually writen
7.6... And even the installer displays 7.5...
So I think it's just some typo error on the webpage... Sorry about that.

Thanks a lot for your help!

Mathieu Lemoine.

Hey, you shouldn't say sorry - Cincom should...

Good to hear you are up 'n running :-)

In case you decide to upgrade to 7.6 (available real soon now) make sure
you install it in a directory /separate/ from 7.5 (the installer will
suggest to overwrite 7.5 ).

If you decide to do serious development with VW I suggest you use the
'Store' SCM from the start (see the documentation for installation
instructions).

Enjoy!
