[vwnc] Why is the public repository being used for course work?

Randy Coulman
At the risk of being a curmudgeon....

I follow the RSS feed for the public Store repository on a regular basis.  Several times a year, the feed gets completely flooded with students publishing their course work.  It starts out with some things published by "rw89", followed by many, many publishes by students doing their projects.

Many of these packages have very generic names, such as "Model" and "UI".

From some Google searching, it appears that this is being done as part of CS 2340 at Georgia Tech.  As of this writing, there are 10 bundles and 22 packages that have "2340" in their names.

Is there a good reason why the public repository is being used for this course?  Couldn't you run a PostgreSQL instance on your campus network for use by your students?

Don't get me wrong -- I'm glad that you are teaching Smalltalk, and I hope you continue for a long time.

The public respository is intended for sharing useful code with the rest of the community.  True, there's a lot of old, crufty stuff in there, but adding numerous generically-named packages and bundles that no one else is ever going to look at doesn't help.

Thanks,
Randy

I agree.

If Cincom would like to support students by making an open repository

available for courses then maybe it can create another one just for that

purpose.
