Eliot can probably provide a better answer than this, but if I can believe
what Google tells me about "EXC_CRASH (SIGABRT)", then it seems likely
that this is a memory access violation somehow associated with allocating
in new object in the object memory. Beyond that I don't see any obvious
indication of the cause.

Google also suggests that if you have McAfee on your Mac (I'm not sure why
anyone would do that), then get rid of it because it apparently causes
problems like this.

If the failure is reasonably repeatable, then you can try running your
image on an interpreter VM from http://squeakvm.org/unix/ and see if the
symptoms change (although I think this requires installing X11 and
Freetype on your Mac in order to run the VM).

Yes.  But there should hopefully be the output of error on the console and that would disambiguate between the two possible causes.  This is the stack:

The first means that something wrote past the end of an object and this was detected when a new object was allocated, seeing that freeSpace did not contain the pattern expected.  This e.g. happens when passing buffer objects to foreign code which writes beyond the object.

The second usually means infinite recursion.  Looking at the memory map at the end of the error report I think that the error is last object overwritten.

I guess I was looking in the wrong place. I ended up using the 4.5 all-in-one as if it were simply a vm. Where is the preferred download these days?

That’s it; the all-in-one is the 4.5 standard set of image & vms. We haven’t yet got a set of individual vms for non-x86 machines, nor just the image/changes/etc.

Well, a small test seems to crash the vm sooner rather than later when getting some pages from an https server. Can someone point me to the best plugin (mac) and best image code for squeakssl so I can be sure I'm not testing with something obsolete?

I figured out where the "console" ends up and you are right - is was last object overwritten. File attached if it's of any use. My testing has proceeded to the point that repeated calls to "SqueakSSL google: 'squeak'" work fine, but calls to a very similar method connecting to a different host will crash the vm after a few iterations.

The listLoadedModules command should give you the version, which should be 'SqueakSSL VMMaker.oscog-eem.584 (e)'.  i.e. in the Cog VMMaker branch, any thing 584 and later.  I'm on VMMaker.oscog-eem.657.  Instructions on how to build a Cog dev image are at http://www.mirandabanda.org/cogblog/build-image/

At this point I would switch to gdb, set a breakpoint in error, run the reproducible case, then use

call printOop(objectBefore(freeStart))

to find out which object was overwritten.  That may be a good enough clue to find out where the overwriting is occurring.  You can try

call longPrintOop(objectBefore(freeStart))

which may give you more info.

both for the version I found on the web and the version included in the squeak4.5 all-in-one. (This is despite the latter bundle being smaller and dated 2 years later). So, is the version you reference different in an important way? Can it be downloaded somewhere? Or do I need to learn abould building/compiling to get a current plugin?

p.s. if anyone cares to do a quick test, the attached cs has two tests: repeatedly read some google urls or some from another site. The other site kills my 4.2 image and the current 4.5 image with Cog2749 or with the vm from the 4.5a--in-one, using either the SqueakSSL plugin from Nov 2011 or Aug 2013.

I've come to understand a bit about why the VM was crashing when making requests via SqueakSSL. For some sites I could make request after request with no ill effects. A successful request/response looks like this:

this is the only SqueakSSLWrite: not immediately following a sqEncryptSSL, so where did it come from? I don't know, but I do know it's using the same buffer provided in the last sqEncryptSSL call. The problem is that this buffer was a method temp and may well have moved or been gc'd in the interim. My hack was to make the buffer used by encrypt and connect a permanent one to minimize the chance of movement. Just to verify, I zeroed this buffer once the request had been sent and checked it after the response had been received. This is what it looked like:

the 27 bytes indicated in the squeakssl log output were inserted in this buffer at the next output position. Not sure why this extra write happens where it does or if it happens in other OS configurations, so the real fix is still a mystery. I think I can live with the global buffer for my purposes.

I figured out where the "console" ends up and you are right - is was last object overwritten. File attached if it's of any use. My testing has proceeded to the point that repeated calls to "SqueakSSL google: 'squeak'" work fine, but calls to a very similar method connecting to a different host will crash the vm after a few iterations.

At this point I would switch to gdb, set a breakpoint in error, run the reproducible case, then use

call printOop(objectBefore(freeStart))

to find out which object was overwritten.  That may be a good enough clue to find out where the overwriting is occurring.  You can try

call longPrintOop(objectBefore(freeStart))

which may give you more info.

Yes.  But there should hopefully be the output of error on the console and that would disambiguate between the two possible causes.  This is the stack:

There are two possible errors in eeInstantiateSmallClasssizeInBytes
error("last object overwritten");
error("out of memory");


The first means that something wrote past the end of an object and this was detected when a new object was allocated, seeing that freeSpace did not contain the pattern expected.  This e.g. happens when passing buffer objects to foreign code which writes beyond the object.

The second usually means infinite recursion.  Looking at the memory map at the end of the error report I think that the error is last object overwritten.
