[ANN] I am going to leave github

Herby Vojčík
Hello!

I have strong personal reasons for leaving github completely, deleting
my account, which I will likely do this Friday.

As a consequence, I would not be able to continue contributing, and
ultimately, maintaining Amber project. In the meantime, Owners group
contains Nicolas Petton and Manfred Kröhnert, which are both busy, but
can appoint another person to coordination if you find one.

I have my personal fork of Amber self-hosted at
http://lolg.it/amber/amber.git, so maybe I will continue development if
I find time for it, but will likely need to change the name (to be able
to use bower/npm with it).

Thanks for understanding,

Herby

The way I see it, we have 2 options:

1. You step down as maintainer, and we can try to find a new one
2. We move Amber to another git hosting

Even if you're completely entitled to fork Amber, I would rather not
have the community split.

Cheers,
Nico

Would you agree to wait a bit more, to get enough time to get back on
our feet?

Hello Herby,

first of all, thank you very much for the excellent work you did so far for Amber.

The main problem I see with moving Amber is the visibility which is not really given if we move to a platform smaller than GitHub, GitLab, or BitBucket.
But neither of those are an option for you, as you wrote in your blog entry.

I hope we can work this out somehow.

Best,
Manfred

Egoistically, I'd prefer moving to site I am fine with. OTOH, Github
became synonym to open source nowadays, so for a project itself it seems
better to stay on Github. At least until Github holds its de facto
monopolistic postion (which I think it will lose, but it may take time).

For a political correct Westerner, my motives to do that look ridiculous, even disgusting. So I don't know to make people on the list uncomfortable unnecessarily. If you are really interested, ask privately.

agreed. unless trying to find a new maintainer is one of the goals of this
move, the community should follow the hosting choices of the maintainer.

it would be rather odd to fork the project just because of the choice of
hosting.

personally i applaud any move that strengthens alternatives to github.

private hosting is fine, though i'd like to ask if gitlab would be a suitable
alternative?

apart from that, would there be any objection to heep the github repo running
as a mirror if that is desired?

greetings, martin.

If you mean gitlab cloud offer, I explored all the free alternatives I found (gitlab, bitbucket, assembla) and all lacked in the fundamentals I hold important and which were the main thing that I am finally moving off Github (I would even generalize that, due to social dynamics / Zeitgeist, no cloud provider is ok. For me. Because dangers are too high).

If you mean choosing gitlab over gogs for self-hosting, I chose gogs for simplicity and don't want to install the heavier GitLab even if I understand is probably superior as to features.

fair enough. i have no objections to that, though i am curious what dangers you
see in cloud-hosting of public code, and also which fundamentals you are
missing from the existing services.

no, i didn't mean that, in fact i look forward to an opportunity to see gogs in
action.

what about this point though?

If the hosting is changed, having a mirror would indeed be great.

I am more a freedom of speech / expression kind of guy , so fire away , I am definitely interested and I am willing to bet so are most people here.

If anything having our main maintainer and contributor happy is very important ;)

Oh, sorry, forgot. Yes, I've got no problem with mirroring (well, maybe
in fact, I deeply have, as it gives Github which policies I dislike a
reason to exist and keep important a few days more, but I am probably
willing to let the mirror be if that's really what people want. But I
don't want to use github as repo field in package.json / url registered
for bower). That is, I leave Github b/c reason and thus I do not want to
support its cause in any way.

fair enough. i have no objections to that, though i am curious what dangers you

We are using GitLab for the open source code from our Institute which contains a quite big robotics framework (https://gitlab.com/groups/ArmarX).

So far we are quite satisfied with the service (which also contains private repositories).
GitLab also embraces open source (https://about.gitlab.com/2016/02/09/gitlab-open-strategy/) which helps if you really decide sometime that you want to migrate all your repositories to a privately hosted instance.

Best,
Manfred

I can pay for the private hosting if needed, already running a couple of VMs on Digitalocean and the cost is not that high.

There's also this hybrid solution I love lately. Based on the Bit Torrent protocol by the company with the same name. It allows for decentralized syncing via p2p. I use it as a great backup/mirror solution across multiple OSs. You can share
something R, RW or owner (the pro version(one time payment) lets you manage these permissions on the fly) and each machine archives changed files for as many days as you want. It's encrypted etc etc

In conjunction with Git you get a very powerful transparent sync+versioning approach that is hard to match.

Best,
Manfred

Hello!

I have strong personal reasons for leaving github completely, deleting my account, which I will likely do this Friday.

As a consequence, I would not be able to continue contributing, and ultimately, maintaining Amber project. In the meantime, Owners group contains Nicolas Petton and Manfred Kröhnert, which are both busy, but can appoint another person to coordination if you find one.

I have my personal fork of Amber self-hosted at http://lolg.it/amber/amber.git, so maybe I will continue development if I find time for it, but will likely need to change the name (to be able to use bower/npm with it).

Thanks for understanding,

Herby

Perhaps it would be better to look for another maintainer.
Every time I think of Herbys opinons I get the bad feeling he maybe has when he thinks of our modern world achievements.
Open mindedness is at least for me the main requirement to work with someone.
