Hello everyone. I'd like to ask you to try and use the recent VMs built by Esteban. We all understand that it may not fully functional and could have some issues. But the point is, that the only way to discover glitches is to try it. Because if we wait till Esteban deliver perfect VM, it may never happen. Without people who testing it and providing feedback, it will simply won't work. So, Mac owners, lets help Esteban to bring us new shiny toy and try using newly built VMs and give feedback. The VMs i am talking about is located here: - Cog JIT https://pharo-ic.lille.inria.fr/hudson/view/Cog/job/Cog-Mac-Cocoa/ - Stack VM (no JIT) https://pharo-ic.lille.inria.fr/hudson/view/Cog/job/StackVM-Mac-Carbon/ For issues, you can use cog issue tracker (http://code.google.com/p/cog/issues/list), or vm-dev mailing list. yes, that's probably the reason... Cocoa version should work on any OS release since Cocoa (that is all OS X versions, right?). Carbon VMs should also work on OS 9... (Thanks Eliot for a way to remember which one came first!) I'm not sure of the compatibility range of previous Mac VMs, but I heard on this list that many schools in the US have rather old Macs.... OS 9 no I think it's been 7 years since a binary workable on OS 9 was built. I'm not sure that one can still get libs that link against particularly old versions of the Cocoa frameworks anymore. Panther added an odd req'ment, IIRC: one had to have a FireWire jack to install it (memory may fail, this might have been Tiger, not Panther.) It was pretty obvious that Apple was phasing out Macs older than FireWire. They seem to do this with both software and hardware on a pretty regular basis. When I was doing service work on Macs, I remember noticing that it was on a fairly regular schedule of X years, but I can't remember what small number X was. Hi Esteban, Both these work both with Pharo and Cuis on OS X 10.5.8. There is a minor quirk, though. It happens both with Cuis and Pharo: Upon startup, the Display shows garbage with stuff from the current Mac display for a fraction of a second, later it gets fixed. This doesn't happen with Carbon VMs such as Eliot's release of Cog and the 4.2.4 VM from John. Thanks! Ah, no it's an open/GL issue. On the first frame paint it appears to use un-initialized video memory, which happens to be full of visual stuff. Technically I'd say it's a security issue, but it seems the video layer doesn't hand you sanitized bytes when asked. To track it likely you need to look at the timing of the open gl buffer flush versus the timing of when Squeak has drawn to the display.
