Hi!
I do not remember if I asked already. I just moved to the country of Guiness. Is there any of you in Ireland ? Cheers, Alexandre -- _,.;:~^~:;._,.;:~^~:;._,.;:~^~:;._,.;:~^~:;._,.;: Alexandre Bergel http://www.iam.unibe.ch/~bergel ^~:;._,.;:~^~:;._,.;:~^~:;._,.;:~^~:;._,.;:~^~:;. |
Hi Alexandre,
I am from there and go back to visit once or twice a year. Hope you find more squeakers! -Simon |

[Sent to the list as this might provide the opportunity for a more
general English/Irish get-together - anyone else interested?] > From: [...] Alexandre Bergel > I just moved to the country of Guiness. > Is there any of you in Ireland ? Ah, 'tis the Emerald Isle, to be sure. Trinity's a lovely place, but I suggest getting out of Dublin and sampling some of the countryside. Ask the locals, but I'll mention Powerscourt, Newgrange in the Boyne Valley (and Knowth and Dowth - you get a better picture if you see all three). Go a bit further and you get the Irish midlands (peat-fired power stations eg. at Shannonbridge), the Shannon itself, Clonmacnoise... and some quiet pubs with three locals who look like they've been hewn out of the peat themselves, drinking Guinness and glaring at you suspiciously from under the flat caps as you walk in. I'm actually nearer to you than you are to the South of Ireland... I'm just over the Irish Sea in Manchester, England :-). If you ever want a break in a much less civilised country, walk-on fares to the HSS (operates out of Dun Laoghaire, the DART will get you there) or the good ol' vehicle ferry from the North Wall of Dublin harbour are pretty cheap. That gets you to Holyhead (right on the north-west tip of Wales), from which Crewe, Chester, Liverpool and Manchester are all easily reachable by coach or train, and the rest of mainland Britain isn't too much further. Feel free to contact me if you want to meet up. Gigs permitting, I'll happily buy you a pint or three of decent English bitter :-). I'd love to come back over to Ireland, but personal circumstances don't really permit that at the moment. Maybe next year... - Peter |

Sounds like any meeting in Manchester should visit the Beer House or Marble Arch at some point in order to test this theory. Besides, the English Guinness brewery has closed, so the lightly fermented Liffey water is now shipped over directly from the main brewery in Dublin - and tastes much better as a result. > Well, if Alexandre brings some stout, I might even consider exposing > myself to the harsh life in the UK for a meeting :P That's promising. Anyone else? Alexandre included? - Peter |

Thanks for this sweet description. Unfortunately, I haven't found the
time to visit much. I have been quite busy in looking for a flat. I do not Manchester, therefore I have to visit it. I need a bit of time to settle here, then I will travel around in ireland and uk... Of course I will organize something here as soon as I feel there are
enough people interested in that. Manchester sounds like to be an interesting place to start something... [snip] I'll be starting a lecturer position in CS at U. Manchester in May and would love to hang out. I hope this news makes Manchester a *more* interesting place to start something :) Cheers, Bijan. |

Yell once you're here if you want (yet another excuse for) a beer - I work 20 mins walk from Manchester CS. Is this via Ian Horrocks' group? And does that mean you can book one of the Atlas rooms for a meet? ;-) - Peter |
