Appearance>Prefs>Help walkback & fix

Clicking on the little "Help!" Button in World > Appearance >
Preferences causes a walkback (subscript out of bounds: 0), in at
least 3.7 to 3.10. I've reported the issue in Mantis (issue 6816),
along with a fix and some badly needed refactoring ;-)
