Croquet on Ubuntu

Jim Sowers-2
I'm a relative newbie to Linux and am running Ubuntu.  Works pretty well -- except for printing! and wireless drivers.

Is anyone out there running Croquet on Ubuntu? or Debian?

Would love to hear your experience.

Thanks.

Hi, Jim,
I don't use wireless, but several of the folks on the FC6 mailing list do.  I understand that Ubunto is similar (maybe rooted in FC?).  Check out their archive for wireless or better still, your specific wireless card.  Here is the URL: www.redhat.com/archives/fedora-list

for wireless drivers, read up on ndiswrapper, it lets you use many
windows wifi drivers under linux...

I have finally managed to get it running to the point of seeing the
rabbit. Linux is pretty much Linux, we share the same kernel and video
drivers and file permissions. So, if you want to email me directly, I'll
step you through what I have managed to do so far in order to make it
work. Ric

You don't say which version of Ubuntu, but I'm running edgy. Wireless
and printing worked out of the box.

I run Croquet and it works fine. I've had to do some unix2dos on the
shell scripts and set the file permissions to execute on the
distributions. I think the Croquet devs mostly use windows so they can't
check this stuff.

Re: Croquet on Ubuntu

Jim Sowers-2
Thanks Bill, et al.

I am running the latest version of Ubuntu (Edgy), but it did not run out of the box.  (I actually have a, somewhat dusty, computer science degree.)  And I got the help from a tech jock friend too, but my problems always seem to be the unusual corner cases!

Perhaps Feisty Fawn (7.04) due next month will resolve the issue.  Also, my Brother printer driver not only did not work, it installed a script that generates an error message every time I install system updates.

Anyway, I've done all the usual stuff--Ubuntu forums, etc.  Thus, I wasn't really seeking help on the wireless/printer/Ubuntu front. Just wanted to know if anyone was running Croquet on Ubuntu, so I could hear if it worked in that context, and perhaps have someone to ping.

Thanks again,

Jim

Re: Croquet on Ubuntu

Bill Six-2
Jim,

While I have only briefly played around with Croquet, the only issue I have encountered (using the beta release on Ubuntu's Edgy) was an issue with OpenGL not being initialized because of a problem regarding X's composite module.  I came across this after looking at http://croquetweak.blogspot.com/ (under OpenGL in a Workspace).

After modifying my xorg.conf, OpenGL worked correctly, and I've had a lot of fun with Croquet :-)

Hope that helps,

Bill Six
