Is anyone working on SmartBoard (or Promethean Board) applications with
Croquet?... we have a prof of concept (using mostly the KAT/WisconsinWorld demo - we are it calling Edusim for now) that we are running by school administrators but would love to collaborate with anyone looking at the Smart/Promethean Board applications. We are very new to Squeak and have only be experimenting with Croquet for 3-4 months.. so our proficiency with it is a little limited at the moment. Here is our prof of concept video for anyone interested in collaborating with us on this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=etBpUcNGVlU Thanks in advance ! Rich ===== |
What a terrific idea!
I gather that interactive whiteboards run from from about $800 to $4000. What sort of features/price do you find to be required to do this effectively? Any particular issues? -Howard On Sep 26, 2007, at 3:01 PM, [hidden email] wrote: > Is anyone working on SmartBoard (or Promethean Board) applications > with > Croquet?... we have a prof of concept (using mostly the KAT/ > WisconsinWorld demo > - we are it calling Edusim for now) that we are running by school > administrators but would love to collaborate with anyone looking at > the > Smart/Promethean Board applications. > > We are very new to Squeak and have only be experimenting with > Croquet for 3-4 > months.. so our proficiency with it is a little limited at the moment. > > Here is our prof of concept video for anyone interested in > collaborating with > us on this: > > http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=etBpUcNGVlU > > > > Thanks in advance ! > > Rich > ===== |
First off... WOW, and THANK YOU to the Croquet developers community. The
Croquet/Interactive Whiteboard prototype videos have really elicited some wonderful feedback! As a result of the prototype videos a major maker of interactive smartboards in the U.S. has contacted me wanting to know more information about what we were using, and showing a very keen interest in demonstrating Croquet on their boards in upcoming trade shows. Obviously this is a wonderful new opportunity for Croquet in the K-12 environment. I would like to invite everyone in the community to contribute to our small project (We call the prof of concept Edusim). In the event you missed the video I have provided a link to it below, as well as a link to a teacher requested follow up video (showing the 8 minute creation of a mini "Moon lesson"). I have a pilot group of 6th-7th graders using/exploring "Edusim" and am in the process of getting parental concent forms so I can share video of the kids interacting with the technology.... Its truely magic watching the kids move, build, explore with direct manipulation of objects on the interactive boards and I am looking very forward to sharing their experience through video very soon. So please, if you have a passion for Croquet or K-12 educational technology feel free to contribute your ideas, codes, suggestions, videos to our little wiki (I provided the link below as well). Additionally, if you know of anyone that may be interested in contributing - please pass this memo along. Prof of Concept Pt 1: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=etBpUcNGVlU Prof of Concept Pt 2: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9txgyhz1sDo (Kids interacting with the technology will be posted mid next week) A Quick Wiki to contribute additional concepts/videos etc. http://edusim.pbwiki.com (PW = 007) Thank you again.. and best regards ! David Faught has been building an improved TPainter that you might
want to try. I think it should be a straight load-in upgrade. http://www.nabble.com/CCPainter-t4379347.html http://jabberwocky.croquetproject.org:8889/PublicContributions -H On Sep 29, 2007, at 2:20 PM, [hidden email] wrote: > First off... Hello,
Below is the video of our middle school pilot group exploring the Edusim prototype today. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MKxxzu00zx8 Best Regards Rich ========= |
How are interactions normally requiring the keyboard handled by that
interactive-whiteboard device? Hello Chris,
The boards actually have a popup keyboard widget the students use. its slightly visible to the right of the screen in the beginning of the video. =============== On 10/3/07, Chris Muller <[hidden email]> wrote: > How are interactions normally requiring the keyboard handled by that > interactive-whiteboard device? > |

I'm sure that this is lots of fun (I'd like one!) but surely the real fun
starts when you have 2 or more hooked together, which is what Croquet is all about. Or at least another PC or three. |
Its fantastic when the boards are connected .. the kids were
connecting and doing virtual scavenger hunts with each other yesterday.... I had some film of them doing that but the video had kids obscuring the smartboard from the camera (and a few of the kids in the video did not bring back their parental release forms for publishing them online) ... The kids LOVE this stuff .... We have several really sharp kids in the group I am wanting to recruit to explore Squeak, build complex models with Blender, as well as taking to presentations with me to demo it to school administrators. ========= On 10/4/07, David Faught <[hidden email]> wrote: > I'm sure that this is lots of fun (I'd like one!) but surely the real fun > starts when you have 2 or more hooked together, which is what Croquet is all > about. Hello all,
i want to run croquet on pure 64 bit linux system. Got tired for reading old articles and postings in newsgroups about 64 bit squeak and so on. It is impossible to decide quickly if some information is actual or outdated. So, I read something about 64 bit squeak-vm's and 32 Bit images. Now my questions: 1. did anybody run croquet on pure x86_64 linux? 2. can anymody make me a bit more clear about 64 bit squeak-vm's and 32 Bit images? 2.1 Can I run the official croquet image on such vm? 2.2 How to compile such vm easily, exists a wiki about? 2.3 Do I have to convert the croquet image to 64 bit? How? 2.4 If I have converted, can I continue work as normal with the croquet-reposetories. For some help, also with not outdated references i'd would be happy. Thanks, m. |

Don't know - Croquet relies on FFI and if that works with a 64 bit VM I have no idea. > 2.2 How to compile such vm easily, exists a wiki about? See http://squeakvm.org/unix/ If that fails, ask on http://lists.squeakfoundation.org/mailman/listinfo/vm-dev > 2.3 Do I have to convert the croquet image to 64 bit? How? No. > 2.4 If I have converted, can I continue work as normal > with the croquet-reposetories. Yes. > For some help, also with not outdated references i'd would be happy. The majority of Squeak hackers doesn't see the point of a "pure" 64 bit system. Even 64 bit Linux is quite capable of running 32 bit software, and space should not be a problem on such a machine. So except for making most parts of the VM 64 bit clean there hasn't been a lot of interest. Relatively few Squeakers do Croquet. So if you ask on the squeak-dev or vm-dev lists, you get a higher chance of meeting someone interested in 64 bits. - Bert - |

You'd have to build a 64-bit Croquet VM, I believe - a small variation
from the 64-bit Squeak VM. I have thought about trying it, but haven't done it. Will cheer you on. Mathias Krüger wrote: > Hello all, > > i want to run croquet on pure 64 bit linux system. I question the educational value of this hardware configuration, but the cool factor is certainly there.
I have set up a Croquet world and ran it through a data projector on a 12 foot wall... and controlled my avatar with a Wii remote. It's lots of fun, but, again, little educational value. -Matt On 10/4/07, Rich White <[hidden email]> wrote: Its fantastic when the boards are connected .. the kids were |
The kids would definitely say otherwise ..... those k-12 teachers out
there would agree, kids almost demand a "Richness" to their educational content now days (especially by middle school !)... when discussing molecules for example, the ability for the teacher to bring up a 3D environment consist ant with the discussion, and either connect their interactive board through their school network to another in the school, or the students connecting to the board from their laptops to interactively build, manipulate, and discuss the topic..... a very rich educational experienceindeed! The kids really seem to love being able to directly manipulate the 3D virtual objects on the board..... its definitely a new paradigm in k-12 classroom interactive whiteboard technology and the students are responding very well to the Edusim prototype..... The pedagogy is certainly in its infancy, but it captures their senses, encourages them to create, and best of all .. the kids love learning this way ! I hope to keep the group informed of the work as it evolves ! ======== On 10/4/07, Matthew Schmidt <[hidden email]> wrote: > I question the educational value of this hardware configuration, but the > cool factor is certainly there. > > I have set up a Croquet world and ran it through a data projector on a 12 > foot wall... and controlled my avatar with a Wii remote. > > It's lots of fun, but, again, little educational value. > > -Matt > > > On 10/4/07, Rich White < [hidden email]> wrote: > > Its fantastic when the boards are connected .. the kids were > > connecting and doing virtual scavenger hunts with each other > > yesterday.... Quick updated... had a chance to film a teacher with a few youngers on a SMARTtech SMARTboard with the Edusim prototype (with their fingers rather than a stylus)... she intends to use it her lessons through the week:

An update - Smarttech (Makers of the SMARTboard) rep emailed 2 days ago to let me know they will be demoing the Edusim on their SMARTboard at an upcoming educational technology trade show called Educause in Seattle (http://www.educause.edu - October 23–26). Also have 2 teacher submitted "resource packs" (lessons) . The Learning Tree Institute is discussing the details of offering mini-grants to teachers to develop Edusim lessons (the goal is to have 50 lessons within the next 6 months). We also have several Edusim pods on our Secondlife Island with Edusim signage, video etc that are getting a fair amount of traffic on our Greenbush Island (if you are interested in seeing them - search "Greenbush Island" in SL - you will see the Education Service Center lands in the results)
