Etoys 4.1 Release Candidate 1

Bert Freudenberg
Hi all,

we are getting really close to this year's Etoys release. I'm copying more mailing lists than usual in hope to get some more testers :)

Here is the first release candidate (scroll down to "release candidates"):

        http://squeakland.org/download/

There is a Mac installer already, and a To-Go version that works without installing on Mac, Linux, and Windows. A real Windows installer will follow, as well as a release for OLPC/Sugar.

Draft release notes are at

        http://wiki.squeakland.org/display/sq/Etoys+4.1+Release+Notes

If you find problems, please report them in our tracker, or by replying to this mail.

        http://tracker.squeakland.org/

We are in code freeze now, only severe bugs will be touched.

Translations can still be updated before Sep 25 - help welcome:

        http://translate.sugarlabs.org/projects/etoys_new/

The final release is scheduled for Sep 29.

For the list of changes, see below.

Thank you!

- Bert -

Changes since the beta release:

* pop-up arrows now enabled by default
* new DrGeo examples project (see gallery)
* new home project (green border more visible)
* Demon Castle renamed to Etoys Castle and fixed
* revised guides for English and Spanish
* DrGeoII translations for es,fr,ja,de
* updated German and Japanese translations
* removed languages with too few translations (ar_SY, en_GB, km, pap, pl, zh_TW)
* hide distracting/not-functional preference panel buttons
* allow negative timer values
* shared flaps are not destroyed anymore when switching projects
* various smaller fixes

Re: Etoys 4.1 Release Candidate 2

Kjell Godo
I think that the eToys that comes on the OLPC should have the full
Squeak development environment open up if you click on the right menu
command.  Kids should be able to program in Smalltalk on the OLPC!
Use the tutorial from the new Pharo distribution to teach Smalltalk.
Make a simplified Browser like in the Programming Robots book that can
be used also.

  This is a bit outdated, but there is a "how-to" document:

It does. On the OLPC XO there is a special "view source" key that brings up the source code for every program. In Etoys, it shows a menu with access to browsers etc. On other machines, try "command-comma" to see it (chosen to be similar to command-period which brings up the debugger).

Agreed. It would be awesome if you could make a project that has those tools open. We would happily add it to the "Examples" section.

If you have that, please upload it to our tracker at

        http://tracker.squeakland.org/

And of course, other improvements are welcome too. The Etoys inbox is open at

        http://source.squeak.org/etoysinbox.html

Would this work as well?

  1. Pull out a Text object from the object flap.
  2. Type in "Preferences disable: #eToyFriendly"
  3. (On Windows) Hit the Ctrl-D key combination.
  4. Wait a second.
  5. Click on the world (desktop) to see the world menu with all the programming functions which it allows.
Cheers,
Darius

 This is a bit outdated, but there is a "how-to" document:
