fyi, carbon vm on mac intel Carbon VM 3.8.11beta5U, versus unix out
of the box non-gnuified and unix out of the box gnuified with fixes to avoid crash on startup. Thanks to Todd for doing this work, I'll work with a bit more to see if we can improve the poor raw performance.
