As you can see from the other replies, some find the install to be easy.
In the past, others have had problems, sometimes with network
configuration. We've made improvements to the product to eliminate some
of the problem scenarios. I hope your install is easy, but if it's not,
let the list know. We'll help you figure out how to get past whatever
the hangup is, and it will give us good feedback for continued improvement.

Ha! Not too surprising.

I know nobody is interested. But I don't understand why taking an approach like I did with virtual-gemstone [1] is not a good fit to produce applicances and make it possible for people to adjust their own. The stuff in the repository is quite old so I don't think it will run out of the box.

A short summary:

- you provide an iso image of your preferred linux distro
- veewee installs a basic linux
- it hands control over to vagrant
- vagrant configures the system
- vagrant installs chef
- chef uses the available recipes to install all the software you need

I made this up to installing nginx, gemstone, install seaside in gemstone, etc. If everything it is one command to invoke that spits out a read made virtual appliance that runs gemstone. I never did it but it is prepared so that you could generate the appliances from a jenkins server.

Norbert,

I am aware of your work...

Last summer I started work on GsDevKitHome[1], which defines a disk structure for laying down multiple stones on disk plus supporting disk-based infrastructure ... and I'm in the death throes of getting another GsDevKitHome release out the door ...

In the fullness of time, I expect that GsDevKitHome will get to the point where I can blow the dust off of your work and merge GsDevKitHome with it ...

If someone wants to step up and modernize Norberts approach and merge with GsDevKitHome, I'd be more than happy to see that done (I'd even help where I could)... but if you are going to wait for me to do it ... then we're back to the "fullness of time":)

Au contraire. We are definitely interested. What we lack is either time or expertise, depending on who you look at.

If there is anyone out there with the experience to automate building an appliance from the latest releases, it would be wonderful if you could start on it. (But it might be best to wait for Dales latest GsDevKit work, first.)

My gemstone time at the moment is close to zero. But if someone steps up I'm happy to mentor the things that have to be done regarding veewee, vagrant, chef. It isn't as horrible as it sounds. And now that vmware is not a blocker anymore using virtualbox is a feasible approach ;)

In the german market ;) You cannot beat redhat in the US.

My approach (I wrote an email about earlier) uses chef to orchestrate linuxes. There you "install a package". On debian systems it uses apt-get and on suse yast. It is an easy way to provide cross-linux-platform support.

What sort of automation are you looking for here?

After several back and forth emails from Dale, I was able to follow a seemingly simple set of instructions to get a brand new copy of glass up and running on ubuntu 12.x

It was mainly downloading files and copy+paste from webpages.  The thread history should be available in the archives if you want to search.   Or I can attempt to dig it out and add to this thread.

Re: [Glass] GLASS appliance (VMWare virtual machine) still available?

GLASS mailing list
Jon,

The set of tools that Norbert is referring to veewee, vagrant, chef, etc. would be used to produce a GsDevKit appliance from scratch. The core installServer script would remain unchanged, but a number of the various copy/paste steps can be automated and different linux distributions can be used as a target ... It would also automate such tasks as installing a web server (like nginx) and could presumably automate the installation of daemontools and monit  as well

Basically you would decide what type of GsDevKit server you wanted built for you and you'd use a script that could produce a "custom" virtual machine on demand ...

Re: [Glass] GLASS appliance (VMWare virtual machine) still available?

FrankB
Well, Gentlemen,

when reading this as a GemStone novice who hates fighting nasty OS installations peculiarities I'd rather wait a while till the experts have finished a hopefully ready-to-run appliance.

Sorry, but I am *application* designer and developer and I have always stayed away as much as possible from such low-level bit drilling parts. This is another reasons why I prefer Smalltalk over fighting compilers and their (in my eyes) most archaic debuggers.

In any case, thank you very much in advance for your efforts.

Greetings
Frank

Hi all,

We are about to go through exactly this process using either cfEngine or Puppet. If there’s a project underway to do this let me know, otherwise I’ll post here once we get started next week and it’s up on github. Our initial targets will be OS X and ubuntu (our dev and deploy platforms) but we’ll make sure it’s extendible to other platforms.

The goal is a hardened GsDevKit server or group of servers that each play a role in a GS deployment. roles for stone, web server, gem servers, etc. to help with scaling to more machines. Any other suggestions and comments are more than welcome.

Cheers,

Jupiter

Hi,

We’ve got some basic puppet modules for a GLASS install which I should adapt to GsDevKit.
It was done by a student doing an apprenticeship and he is delivering that stuff today.

I will take some time tonight and tomorrow to make things available so we can build on top of it from there.

#1 Status of appliance #2 Will you be at ESUG 2015 in Italy?

FrankB
In reply to this post by GLASS mailing list
Hello folks at GemStone,

I am bringing this up again for two reasons:

1) I am still very seriously interested in getting to know GemStone ideally during June 2015 (reason see #2). I have never worked with Pharo and I am neither a Linux expert (despite having worked with Xenix/Unix since 1986!) nor an expert on mastering system level specialties.

Additionally, I recently talked to a very experienced Smalltalk developer who is much more experienced in these system things than I am and he said that when trying to install GemStone he encountered various problems (there was no reason to discuss of what nature) so that he gave up after a few days. I shall not go through such a nightmare. (And please DO NOT tell me that this was simple for you. If it really was then why don't you prove it by making a ready-to-go VM appliance in a couple of minutes!?)

I think that for such a sophisticated and complex system like GemStone it should be kind of natural to enable interested new users to play with it without having to go through a long and painful installation procedure.

To be honest: This enduring absence of a test appliance is not suitable to build-up my confidence!

2) Question to the GemStone folks: Will you be at ESUG in Italy this year?

I am considering to attend primarily to meet you and some other people from overseas for some "strategic discussions".

But since only politicians and journalists are allowed to talk about subjects that they haven't got the faintest clue of, I would very much prefer to have played with GemStone before meeting you.

Hoping that one of the GemStone folks will now "easily and quickly" generate a VM appliance ready to play with (= please with Pharo included and interfaced).

Do I have to mention that my projects that I am considering to use GemStone for not only have the potential but a very good likeliness to by far exceed the limits of your free and low-end versions?!

Best regards
FrankB

Re: [Glass] #1 Status of appliance #2 Will you be at ESUG 2015 in Italy?

GLASS mailing list
Hi Frank,

Yes, GemTalk will be represented at ESUG in Italy (let me know your schedule and we can arrange some time to visit about technical and business issues). So I can get a better idea of your situation, what platform(s) do you have available. If you have a Mac available, then one approach is the GemStone.app that takes care of all the install and configuration steps (see https://programminggems.wordpress.com/2013/09/25/gemstone-on-the-macintosh/).

If you want a virtual machine, are you running it on a Mac, Windows, or a Linux system? Do you have access to a Mac and/or Windows machine?

I understand that you want to get to know GemStone (“a sophisticated and complex system”) without having to learn much about its installation and administration. What things would you like to learn? Do you want a traditional GUI IDE or would you be willing to learn the built-in command-line interface?

Hello

and thank you very much for this super quick reply.

I am currently (still) using Win7 for development but I also have a Linux (SuSe) machine next to me as my "application testing lab". There are VMware and VirtualBox installed on both (I am moving all from VM [due to several security problems] to VirtualBox, which is also much simpler to handle). I shall never ever use any Mac!

>. What things would you like to learn?
Well, seeing is believing! Many things get much clearer if one has DONE them.

Additionally, I would like to get a - even if subjective - feeling for performance. My projects have quite complex objects (database publishing amongst other use cases) and I would probably try to create a couple of test objects to play with - rather more read-write than select.

Also, I want to get to know better the selecting capabilities and compare them to my alternative (and currently in theory preferred) indexing through Sphinx. I must be prepared to support a couple of 10.000 simultaneous users as another of my projects (huge  market niche) has this potential.

>Do you want a traditional GUI IDE or would you be willing to learn the built-in command-line interface?

Well, a question that I cannot fully answer due to my lack of knowledge. I though that this was handled primarily through Pharo. I am NOT positive about command line interfaces but, of course, I use them when required but being an application focused developer I regard hardware and OS as unfortunately indispensable tools (it's even more stupid than sad that the Unix world has not learned anything in the last 30 years in this respect; SuSe's GUI tools are a tiny first step).

Therefore, if you have anything better than command line it will be highly welcome.

BTW: I was NOT expecting that you make one for me specifically but I rather thought that this was a "normal" subject for such a high-end tool.

But in any case thank you in advance.

Re: [Glass] GLASS appliance (VMWare virtual machine) still available?

GLASS mailing list
Hi Frank,

My suggestions:

1) GemStone:
Download the virtual appliance at http://seaside.gemtalksystems.com/jade/glass.zip, unzip, and start it up.
Log in using ‘glass’ as the user and password.
From the command line enter 'ifconfig | grep inet’ (without the quotes) to find out your virtual host’s IP address.
From the command line enter ‘gslist -cvl’ (without the quotes) to confirm that you have a Stone, Cache, and NetLDI running on the virtual server.

2) Jade:
Download Jade from https://github.com/jgfoster/Jade/raw/master/runtime/Jade.zip, unzip it on your Windows 7 machine, and launch Jade.exe.
Select the GemStone/Smalltalk version to match that listed in the gslist command above (I believe it will be 3.1.0.x).
Enter the Host Name or IP address for the virtual server.
Enter the NetLDI service port number (it should be 50377).
Enter the Stone Name from the gslist command above.
Use ‘DataCurator’ and ‘swordfish’ as the user ID and password.
Enter your name (without spaces) as the Monticello User Name.
Click Login.

At this point you can explore the system from Windows.

I don’t expect everything to go perfectly, but I’ll be interested in finding out what problems you encounter so that we can improve the process.

Note that this is only one approach to getting started with GemStone. The more “official” process is the Open Source Development Kit (http://gemtalksystems.com/techsupport/community-and-mailing-lists/) and Dale might provide some references and guidance in that direction.

Hello James,

thank you very much. You surprised me!

I will look at that as soon as I can spend a day off (or better 2-3) and I promise to let you know!

I will also contact you regarding some joint spaghetti carbonara con un Nobile di Moltalcino* or something similar as soon as my plans are definite.

Greetings
Frank

James,

I literally didn't know that you were working on a glass appliance. I guess I will sit back and wait along with everyone else for information...
