Modern and Future Smalltalk

Dennis Schetinin
Hello,

I'm preparing a report for a small local conference on the "Internet Technologies". I would like to present some current Smalltalk trends in this area. First of all, I'm thinking of Pharo efforts in conjunction web frameworks like Seaside, AIDA/Web, Illiad. Certainly I'll talk about Amber and hopefully there'll be a special report on it. I'll mention GemStone. What else should I talk about?

Best regards,

You should talk about Cog! Especially the fact that it runs both
Newspeak and Squeak-derived Smalltalk dialects.

Hello Dennis,

In terms of current Smalltalk trends related to Internet Technologies, may I suggest our on-going work on "service streaming environments" as exposed here (cf. page 359):
http://www.aal-europe.eu/wp-content/uploads/2012/11/Proceedings_AAL_Forum_2011.pdf

It's Smalltalk implementation has been subject to a publication entitled "Web Pontoon: a method for reflective web applications" and available at:
http://dl.acm.org/citation.cfm?id=1942791&dl=ACM&coll=DL

A related piece of work, which focuses on a framework for dynamic service orchestration in cyber-physical systems, may be found here:
http://osl.cs.uiuc.edu/publications/conf/birthday/MechitovA12.html

Which builds upon Smalltalk-mediated joint research as for example reported in:
http://osl.cs.uiuc.edu/publications/aitami07.html
http://osl.cs.uiuc.edu/publications/ios07.html

More on this work may be found at:

Hi Dennis,

For the web you can look at my ESUG presentation:

On the Web Frontiers with Smalltalk
  http://ftp.eranova.si/aida/mivsek-web-frontiers-esug11.pdf

Here you can find current trends of Smalltalk on the web: HTML5,
real-time web, client-side web apps, mobile, revival of MVC pattern,
what are the challenges, how Smalltalkers are prepared for them, etc.

Hope this helps a bit
Janko
