New Cobalt Release for 20090227

John Dougan
There were some things missed in the 20090226 dev build, so I'm pushing out a small bump to get those things in as well as some other changes for Xrfb.

Once it's finished uploading, the new build will be at http://www.duke.edu/~jd135/downloads/cobalt-base-current-build-20090227.zip

  • Keyboard fix for Xrfb is now in.
  • XrfbClient now has better error handling and status reporting
    • This depends on the server version
    • This also needs images in the resources that are currently dummied out to, better ones to come.
  • The light visibility code in now included.
  • Put the kernel extensions for debugging in properly.
  • fixed launchers

Cheers,
  -- John

Have made changes in XrfbClient ... to show Images instead of error messages and also the server code can handle slashdotting and maxSessions limit.

The workflow is as follows:
a) XrfbClient makes a XML query to the Server...
b) If XrfbServer is set not to serveSession, it returns 0
c) If Client receives 0, it shows "Server Down due to OverLoad Image
d) If XrfbServer is set to serverSession, it cleans up orphan apps/sessions
e) If XrfbServer has free sessions ( < maxSessions number) it starts app
f) Client shows the app.

The standard error messages are converted in the form of Images, which go into /resources/textures/vnc/   in the local system.

how do I get first-person ? it used to be shift-cmd-a or something.

third-person is a confusing waste of pixels; one's viewpoint should be
first-person by default :-)

The mouse-wheel will move the camera in and out in the current control layout. I certainly can make sure the key sequence works (I think it used to be ctrl-a), it just seemed less important now we have the mouse-wheel which gives a finer control.

I disagree strongly, third person appears to be important to psychologically establish ones presence and identity in the space as well as alow for more complex interactions without confusion. I know very few people who use 1st person regularly in any other virtual world environment and when they do it is usually for specific situations.

For me at least, real-life is thankfully mostly first-person!

Third-person in games just feels wrong.
