Object Explorer stopped working

My object explorer has suddenly stopped working.

I have not touched the Object explorer and I am not sure exactly when  
it stopped working. The Object explorer displays but when I click the  
arrow to expand the tree it shows nothing. Is there a way to reload  
the object explorer?
