Public Relations Team question

Chris Cunnington-5

Stephane Ducasse and his team have completed a new book on Squeak. It's open
source as a pdf with the option of ordering a copy from Lulu. I think this
is news, and that a press release should be created and added to the Media
section of Squeak.org. And then we can submit this as a news story to
Slashdot. Does anybody have an objection to this?

But is the book finished?

Sounds like a great idea.

That's a great question. And I think the answer is yes. I downloaded the pdf
and Stephane and his team have a complete book here. I'm stunned. I seem to
recall that they were talking about it only a few weeks ago. I think they've
been busy. I just ordered a copy from Lulu that will arrive in the mail, so
I think we have the basis to call this news and to proceed.

This is a very good idea.

Can I suggest that we write a short article for publication on
news.squeak.org? Whatever other material we produce could all point to
that, rather than to the book or the press release directly. This will
help to raise awareness of our blog, and also give a good forum for
comments.

We should think about who we should target: Slashdot, Reddit and Digg
spring to mind immediately. Any others?

It would be useful to let the list know when articles had been
submitted, to give us a chance to vote them up (though we should be
careful not to overdo it - I remember that the DabbleDB folk got
themselves accused of trying to game the Digg voting a while ago).

I'm happy to help with preparation of articles, etc.

Cheers, Michael

Well, it's open, so there will be improved/extended releases in the
future, but this first release is official, yes. Please advertise!

The project started maybe a year ago. The recent activity was Oscar
pushing to finalize a release for the beginning of the semester :-)

Hello all,

Incase anyone missed this; on Sept 3rd Brad Fuller covered Squeak By
Example.

http://news.squeak.org/2007/09/03/coming-soon-open-source-squeak-book/

>From what I can tell it was submitted to reddit.com and so far we received
753 hits on it. (This represents a medium amount of reddit interest).  We
are still receiving about 25 - 35 hits a day on this article.

A press release would still be a good idea and we would be happy to carry it
also on new.squeak.org.

Re: Public Relations Team question

OK, super. I'll contact the PR team off the board. We'll do what we did last
time, which was craft a press release, and then submit it to the Squeak
board.

Once we have a press release on the squeak.org site, then I'll make an
announcement to ask people to submit the story to Slashdot (it's better if
it's more than one person). I'll give the link for people to do that, and
then we can see how we do.

Put up a link on digg.com and paste it here. Then we can get hoards of Squeakers to bring it to the front page.

Hi all... Serge has already done this.

Could we have as many people as possible digg this?

Sad.

Re: Public Relations Team question

Michael Davies-2
I've put a news article on news.squeak.org -- see
http://news.squeak.org/2007/09/14/squeak-by-example-now-published/

Chris, let me know when the fuller press release is available, and
I'll update it to refer to that also.

I don't know how Digg and Reddit work -- is it possible to amend the
submissions to add a link to this article, so that readers end up at a
Squeak page rather than a Lulu page?

I've submitted an article to Slashdot - it's in the Firehose at
http://slashdot.org/firehose.pl?op=view&id=287897 -- please vote it
up!

Hi Michael,

I'll post when the press release has been added to squeak.org. It's a
process, a lot of which is out of my hands, but when it gets added, I will
insure that you are aware of it.

Don't worry about that.  Any time something comes in that's better
then the horrible solutions some of those people like comes along and
actually gets votes they, failing voting it down, start making
accusations.
