Hi All,

I am standing for the Squeak Oversight Board election this year.

While I'm interested in a number of technical issues, I'm also interested in trying to evolve open source communities into functional economic communities. I dream of being able to make a living through participation in the Squeak and Pharo communities. I also dream of Squeak finding a broadly useful niche such as that occupied by R. So while I want to port from Pharo to Squeak Sista/Scorch, Clément Bera and my adaptive optimizer, collaborate with the community to rewrite code using weakness facilities to use eohemerons, and in the VM, collaborate on the threaded (non-blocking) FFI and an incremental mark-sweep collector, I do want to look outwards to increase membership and economic viability of the Squeak community.

Now until Monday 22nd of January 3PM (20.00 UTC): Nominations of SOB members and campaigning!

Candidates should nominate themselves and start their campaign on the squeak-dev mailing list. Or if you nominate someone else, make sure that person really wants to run. :) I will not put anyone on the candidate list until that person makes it known on squeak-dev that he/she intends to run.

During this period, the candidates should ideally present themselves on squeak-dev, unless they have already done so, and the community can ask questions.

I encourage you to reach out to potential candidates, people that are active in the community and represent your views, and ask them to run. Some people will not run without encouragement. Also, I know that some people wait to the last minute to run for the board to see if others will run but please consider getting this year off to a faster start and just jump right in!

Schedule:

Now until Monday 22nd of January 3PM (20.00 UTC): Nominations of SOB members and campaigning!
Monday 22nd of January 2018 3PM (20.00 UTC): Candidate list is finalized.
Monday 22nd of January 2018 4PM (21.00 UTC): Online election starts.
Tuesday 6th of February 2018 6PM (23.00 UTC): Online election ends.

Results will be announced immediately when the election ends.The voting period is one week long and ballots are sent out via email.

And how do you end up on the voter list? See below. :)

IMPORTANT: New voters will NOT be added once the election is started. You MUST try to get on the voter list before the 22nd of January 2018 or you will NOT be able to vote. If your Email has changed please make sure it is changed on the list of voters before the election starts.

If you were invited to vote last year you are already on the voter list, no worries! If you are a new Squeaker and wish to vote you should do ONE of the following:

* Get a "known" Squeaker to vouch for you. If a known Squeaker sends an email to voters (at) squeak.org giving me a name and email for you, then I will add you.

* Send an email to voters at squeak.org yourself (and CC to squeak-dev if you like) with information/arguments showing me that you are indeed serious about voting and that you are indeed a Squeaker.

When the voting period starts all voters will receive an email with instructions and a link to the voting website.

If there are any further questions, just reply *in this thread* and I will closely track it - or send email to voters (at) squeak.org which points to me.

Thanks, Ron, for doing this for our community once again!

I would like to run for the 2018 board. Though I am starting a non
Squeak project with Smalltalk hardware later this year, my focus in 2018
will be on SiliconSqueak hardware, the Squeak VM, better graphics for
Squeak and trying to expand the role of our community and technology in
the world. The latter include the financial issues for the members of
our community, as mentioned by Eliot.

Hi all--

I'd like to serve on the Squeak Oversight Board again this year.

I'm encouraged by livecoding experiments I've done combining Bert's
SqueakJS with several web frameworks (see thiscontext.com), and would
like to push that further with other interested folks. I think such
efforts are useful for navigating and crossing into the development
worlds around us, discovering new application areas for us. I'm also
excited by the 2018 interests of the other candidates, and would love to
join them.

Hi Squeakers,

I'm glad to announce that I will run again this year.
The board power is limited by the amount of $ that it is handling.

So don't expect big plan$ from myself, I drive a tiny part of my own manpower, the rest is already sold.

I wish I can continue to support opensmalltalk-vm, but this is in fact quite independent from board participation.

Nonetheless, I have some ideals that could fit board membership:

- keep our community open and welcoming,

avoid rotting contributions in the inbox, instead provide help, advice and encouragement

(that could occupy part of board technical discussions)

don't hesitate to elect new core contributors

- support evolution of our image, cleaning / packaging / tooling with a great care for backward compatibility and smooth evolution

(that's already a good part of board technical discussions)

- build a peaceful relationship with Pharo, like initiated by opensmalltalk-vm initiative,

if possible, keep Squeak<->Pharo bridges open for code exchange (which is a bit challenging with git switch)

- keep an interest in Cuis too, Juan still is active and inspired (and not alone!)

I've not been the most active member last year, nor am I a natural leader, but I will be happy to serve again.

Anyway I must run again, so that we have at least 8 candidates for 7 places!

But there's no reason to stop here, you don't have to wait half a century or more like some of us did for stepping in :)

The board is warm and friendly.
