Squackers 5 July 2006: RSVP

Hi all-- Every month I host "Squackers", a meeting of Squeak hackers. It happens near San Francisco, USA, on first Wednesdays from 8pm to 10pm pacific time; the next one will be on 5 July 2006. We get together to show what we've been doing and dreaming in Squeak. Please let me know if you'd can make it, if you need directions, and if you have something you'd like to show or discuss. Last month we experimented with getting far-away people hooked in by Skype and instant messaging. We had people from Brazil and New Zealand. This time we'll play with the A/V capabilities of AIM (e.g., through iChat), and VNC to broadcast the projector feed. My AIM ID is "threnkeldwingnut". There were demos of Spoon, Quoth, and the Weather Dimensions weather monitor last time, and SqueakNOS booting a PC. Hi Craig,
I've always wanted to join you. Skype access... Cool! But 8pm to 10pm pacific time is 1am to 3am in Buenos Aires. Perhaps I can attend on August, if I get broadband access at home by then. 8-10 pm PDT is equivalent to 12-2 am ART. I wasn't aware Pacific time is -0700. I thought it was -0800. A bit easier for me then. Pacific Time is -0800 in the winter, but -0700 in the summer. From 1987 through 2006, Pacific Time switches from -0800 to -0700 on the first Sunday of April (at 2am PST,) and switches from -0700 to -0800 on the last Sunday of October (at 2am PDT.) >From 2007 forward, the switch dates will be the second Sunday of March and the first Sunday of November. Most US timezones observe DST, and those that do always switch between "standard time" and "DST" on the same dates (at 2am local time.) The US timezones that do NOT observe DST include those for Hawaii (-1000,) Puerto Rico (-0400,) Arizona other than on Navajo reservations (-0700,) and some parts of Indiana (some counties are -0500 all year round, while others are -0600.) I grew up in Indianapolis and the reason that I heard that IN didn't want to observe DST was because it would confuse the cows at milking time. Maybe it never dawned on the dairy farmers that they could alter their times to adjust for the cows ;-) I live in CA now and recently found out the IN legislature passed a law last year to go to DST. |

Indiana's changes don't fully take effect until next year. I knew about it, but decided that providing that information would have added complexity without adding significant value to the message. I said time zones are more complicated than most people imagine, and the Indiana situation is an excellent example of that. When I was a kid in the summer, it was the same time as Chicago, which is central time (primetime tv started at 7 and ended at 10.
