Squeak on Neo1973

Tony Garnock-Jones-2
Hi all,

I've just recently [1] managed to build the Squeak unix VM v3.9-8 with
the X11 display plugin for the Neo1973 "open-source" cellphone [2],
which runs OpenEmbedded [3].

If anyone here runs a system based on OpenEmbedded (there are a number
of systems based on it), and is interested in trying out the VM on their
device, the tarball of the bitbake build scripts has been attached to
the OpenEmbedded bugtracker - see bug 3013 [4], or simply download the
attachment [5].

Please let me know if you try it, and the results, positive or negative,
you have!

Note that the packages built are just VM packages - the choice of image
is entirely up to you.

Regards,
   Tony

That's great. I struggled a lot trying to get a squeak vm on my
simpad. I planned to put the simpad on ebay next week but now
I think I should give it another try :)

Squeak on Simpad (was Squeak on Neo)

Torsten Sadowski
Hi Norbert,

did you try a qtopia or a x11 squeak on the Simpad? I succeeded only recently
to build an Opie-Image from the dev branch again and I still have to update
the 3.4 qtopia vm.

Cheers, Torsten

The only vm that was available was the qtopia one. I think the
package was called squeak-nox or something like this. I did
myself a reduced gpe image to save some space on the flash. But
I had a lot of problems building a kernel for the simpad, too.
So I quit the project as I don't have that much time to get
into it.

If you have a working version I'll try to build another image.
Having an X11 vm would be great.

thanks,

Norbert
