Technical aspects of belonging to squeak list.s ( Re: Looking for good souls )

Jerome Peace
Someone in the "Looking for good souls" thread raised
the dread of some beginner joining this list for
information then getting hundreds of emails a day that
they didn't want.

The amount of mail that arrives in my mail box from
being a member of this list is well under my control.

I got a mailbox just for the purpose of contributing
to this list. (Getting my first and last name
uncorrectably into the wrong places as you will
notice).

By then I was well aware that the easiest way to
follow the list for me was just reading the archive. I
got (and deleted) just the digest.  And still followed
everything the old way by browsing the archive. The
difference was now I could post and contact others
individually.

Recently I found out that I could even eliminate the
digests by going to my squeakdev profile and just
asking for them not to be delivered. That works fine.

So while a beginner or newbie WILL be swamped with
mail until he learns that trick, surely sooner rather
than later a good kind soul will point this out to him
or her.  And if they figure it out for themselves.
Well I want somebody that clever reading my posts.
Maybe they have some ideas that can help.

Yours in service, --Jerome Peace

Hi Jerome--

Why not just use the Gmane NNTP gateway?

That's good for reading the list, but what about posting?  I'm reading
a message and I simply want to reply to it with one gesture, not have
to switch windows, compose an email, copy and paste the subject, etc..

Does reading through a news reader support that?

Yes; that's how I submitted this message, and every other one I've
written to the group since the gateway was set up, years ago.

        Works great!

Take a look at Forte Agent http://www.forteinc.com/main/homepage.php for
about $30 US you get a combination news reader and email client.  You can
subscribe to multiple news groups and read email from multiple accounts,
filter it into multiple folders and keep it all with one program.

(Oh, I'm using Mozilla Thunderbird, which runs on multiple platforms,
is available free of charge, and does email decently as well, with
threading, multiple accounts, filtering, searching, etc. etc.)

I found that google groups has a much better web interface than gmane.
Threads are neatly presented and, if set up correctly, you can post from
the web.

I would love to be able to follow the squeak list from google groups.

Take a look at how comp.lang.smalltalk or a private list looks like:

        http://groups.google.com/group/comp.lang.smalltalk
        http://groups.google.com/group/clubSmalltalk

The second one is in spanish. And you can subscribe as a regular mailing
list.
