Apply Display/Character Scanner clean-ups from Cuis to MultiCharacter* counter part:
- remove unused paragraph ivar from DisplayScanner
- remove historical dead code from #crossedX
- ifNil: simplifies code a bit

This reduces the number of differences Between single and Multi Character Scanners
