Dear list,
perhaps some of you are aware of this old problem: Installing Squeak 3.9.8 under Linux by description is impossible. - the inisqueak command is missing - the author of the manpage ian pumarta presents a wrong address - a second one can be found in the INSTALL file which is wrong as well I reported this problem more than a year ago several times, but there has been no change up to now. It is a pity, since Squeak is that splendid. Are you installing the package that comes with your Linux distribution or the one from http://squeak.org? I shall investigate this issue further and raise a bug report if there are problems. Hi Michael,.
> > Which instructions are you following? The instructions which follow after the successive run of the INSTALL-script. The instructions about inisqueak are written on the manpage of squeak and inisqueak as well. BTW I do not have the problem to get Squeak run by myself. I know what to do. But it is entirely different to the instructions given. And I think about those who want to get acquainted to Squeak for the first time. > > Which package are you installing? I wonder why SuSE does not have integrated Squeak yet. > I shall investigate this issue further and raise a bug report if there > are problems. As you said, there is a bug report already done in March this year. I did several bug reports last year. But I cannot see any changes. According to a note at the bottom of http://wiki.squeak.org/squeak/3733 (Squeak in Debian) dated 3 October 2006 Steve Jobs told Alan Kay he is willing to re-licence Squeak under the Apache Licence so it can be used in the OLPC system. Has this happened? Will it happen? I think that if Debian was convinced that Squeak could be safely redistributed by them then most other GNU/Linux distributors would follow suit (especialy Ubuntu and Edubuntu). >> I shall investigate this issue further and raise a bug report if there >> are problems. > As you said, there is a bug report already done in March this year. However, because I occasionally build my own VMs, I prefer to keep everything related to a particular project in the same directory - VM, plugins, image, sources. By not installing Squeak in /usr/local (or some other global place) I know that my VM isn't pulling in plugins from elsewhere.
