They have primarily used VR Juggler:
http://vrjuggler.orgIt's C++ and does have python bindings. I'm not familiar enough with
Croquet/Smalltalk to know if VR Juggler (LGPL) would be useful here, but
it does have abstractions for VR input devices, displays, etc.
