Where to ask questions - Squeak Beginners and Squeak Dev?

What sort of questions are appropriate to each group (really means
which questions should you not ask on Squeak Developers)?

As I understand it Squeak is a variant of Smalltalk, so is Squeak
beginners the proper place to ask about Smalltalk Proper and the IDE,
with Squeak developers the place to ask questions about libraries and
the implementation?

The developers list has a lot more activity and it makes me wonder if
most questions are better asked there even if a newbie. I would assume
newbie means people new to programming rather than Smalltalk or its
environments and libraries in general.

Squeak-dev is the original mailing list for Squeak.  Squeak-beginners was set
up so as not to scare off people when the core team talks about "closure
compilers" and "browser plugin environments" on squeak-dev.

Feel free to post beginner questions on either list.  Just don't be scared if
you don't understand everything (yet) that goes by on squeak-dev.

If you're posting about a non-squeak Smalltalk on either list, it would be
best to disclose that up front, because the presumption is that you're using
Squeak. And while no promise of help is *ever* given (this isn't a help
desk!), you might even further adjust your expectations about getting help
with non-squeak smalltalks on a Squeak mailing list. :)

You should not ask annoyingly simple questions on squeak-dev. Here on  
the beginner's list you are invited to ask about anything related to  
Squeak, however simple it may seem.

No, that's not the separation. The primary purpose of squeak-dev is to  
advance Squeak itself, rather than asking questions how to develop  
using Squeak.

No, it's for people not familiar with Squeak yet, which includes  
absolute beginners as well as "switchers" from other environments.  
It's a good idea to read both lists but only ask on the beginner's  
list for at least a couple of months. Then you will get a feel for  
what topic to bring up on which list.

Hi frank

I battled a lot to impose this mailing-list because I felt that  
newbies were afraid asking questions.
And this mailing-list is wonderful. Feel free to post here or on  
squeak-dev. There is no specific
rules. This mailing-list was just created so that you feel free to ask  
any question you have
but you can post to the other two.

I think that the people answering all the questions are doing an  
excellent job!
        Chapeau bas messieurs ;)
