This will be going up on the smalltalk jobs board as well ( in a less casual fashion ) but, I suspect there are many out there who find it as unusable as me ( sorry James ), so I'm posting here as well.
We are getting ready to start the first steps of moving a mod_perl/perl based custom/home grown e-commerce system over to running on GLASS. You would be devoted at least 95% of the time to said work because the rest of us would get pulled away from time to time and we want to keep this moving forward. We are in love with Seaside and GLASS but need someone with experience to decrease our learning curve and become a valued member of the team. This would be an ongoing, full time, telecommuting position. Skills we would value: Seaside Gemstone ( any level of experience, we have limited, just starting out, call us apprentices ) Magritte Pier Monticello in a multi-user environment Monticello integration with svn and/or git Code Critic SUnit You get the idea, I could ramble off things. Obviously if your name was Lukas or Philippe or something of a similar nature we would be thrilled, but we are willing to aim ( and probably have to ) lower. We have suspicion though, that there is a highly skilled smalltalker out there who want to be paid to work full time in Seaside and that we can get you instead of training someone from the inside. ( Horror, of horrors, we have a budget ). Please reply off list for more details. _______________________________________________ seaside mailing list [hidden email] http://lists.squeakfoundation.org/cgi-bin/mailman/listinfo/seaside |
I'm not applying, but potential candidates might like to know where this is based.

Hi Sean,
It seems like you are trying to avoid saying where are
you located. Is this the case? If so, why?

Its a telecommuting position. I didn't think it would matter at all as no one in the IT department works out of an office.
Until yesterday we had people working from Vancouver to Paris. As of today just Vancouver to New York. There is no 'located' as its a telecommuting position and we have people all over. As long as someone can meet the job requirements, they can work on mars for all I care ( although that could make the teaching up part hard. ) Seriously though, EST, NYC? Does it make a difference? Central office is NYC. I work all hours. Doesn't much matter to me. What is this timezone obsession some people have? Maybe if it wasn't mention, it wasn't considered important? It does, if by EST you mean Estonia :)
To be serious though, job searches are often as much about employer as they are about an employee. It isn't unreasonable for candidates to want to know who it is they are dealing with before they decide to apply, which is why lack of detail in your original message might have spawned all those questions. Sad. It took me no time at all to figure out where this job is located based on a few simple pieces of info in the original email.
I am a long way from being a "Lukas or a Phillipe" so I am not interested in leaving my cushy Delphi job for a risky position at which I might well fail due to inexperience, but a little curiosity and resourcefulness would give an interested party all they need to know about the where and who. Best of luck to those who apply though ;) JM On Tue, Feb 17, 2009 at 8:13 PM, Boris Popov <[hidden email]> wrote: It does, if by EST you mean Estonia :) _______________________________________________ seaside mailing list [hidden email] http://lists.squeakfoundation.org/cgi-bin/mailman/listinfo/seaside |

I've already answered plenty of questions off list. After the timezone though, a geographic location for a job that
doesn't have a geographic location is just a little annoying. Even if it leads to Avi giving me a laugh. Maybe if it wasn't mention, it wasn't considered important? Sorry for turning the thread to an unexpected direction. I'm not obsessed with timezone, and I'm not interested in where the office is at all (I didn't ask it). It was just that our team is also geographically distributed, and it often does matter to know when to expect responses from other members, and setting up typical meeting time, etc. (Unless the applicant is also supposed to work all hours.) It is no fun to wake up 2:30 am and listening in a conference call once a week (or more). -- Yoshiki _______________________________________________ seaside mailing list [hidden email] http://lists.squeakfoundation.org/cgi-bin/mailman/listinfo/seaside |

The point is that in these exchanges you appear as
non-transparent, non-communicative, non responsive, with a short fuse, and
controlling. If it's so difficult for you to answer such a simple question
as "where are you located?", what should be expected to happen in future
exchanges?
You say, what does it matter? If a person asks,
for that person it's important. Your physical address shouldn't be a
secret.
You should have been much more upfront about yourself,
your company, your performance track.
Because it seems to be so much what I would like to be
doing, I have considered to apply for the position, but with so many open
questions, I am puzzled.

Victor,
Feel free to ask anything you want. I answered timezone when it was asked. I got annoyed by a question that suggested I was trying to hide the 'where'. I was trying to hide anything, I just never considered it important. I'm willing to answer any questions anyone has. Feel free to contact me off list and ask anything you want. -Sean- On Wed, Feb 18, 2009 at 2:27 AM, Victor <[hidden email]> wrote:
