mcz files --> change sets for Squeak files since 2008? (was Re: [squeak-dev] more archaeology)

Hannes Hirzel
Bob

Monticello files are just zip files and they contain source code in
the subfolder snapshot.
However these are not change sets. I assume this is not new information for you.

I remember there is a way to generate the change sets from the mcz
files from within the image and this has been discussed on this list
before (some years ago... maybe). However at the moment I do not have
a reference.

So the question is -- how do we generate change sets from the mcz
files for the Squeak versions since 2008?

Regards
Hannes

I really know next to nothing about monticello or about the procedures that were in place for those years. Bert did point me to a place to get change sets, but it did not seem to be working very well, so I've not made any progress.

Bob

Well, he mentioned it offline, so maybe it was not an open invitation. I'll let him decide.

For a long time I dislike the current way in which we don’t have a numbered change set with a good name when we update the .image.

My solution is attached, feel free to improve.

Our squeaksource server has a facility for generating changesets corresponding to the difference between two MC versions. However, that process is very time-consuming. If Bob was testing this it could explain the instability over the last couple of days, actually.

A local changeset counter is not a good idea, because it will be different for every image. That is why we calculate the update number as the sum of all MC version numbers which is a lot more comparable.

Bob Arning-2
I have not, other than one attempt which took about a minute to return a 5k change set.

Bob

I know this is your point of view.
But now only Squeak do this.
And if we have things like SqueakCore or SqueakKernel?
