osc vs. midi

I'm new to Squeak and even newer to OSC, which I'd actually managed not
to hear about at all till last week.

My understanding is that osc is designed to be a replacement for midi.  
I'm a musical amateur and have a very simple setup: 1.7 gHz linux
machine with a Roland jv-1010 synth.  Is there a way to route osc
signals to midi output?  I've been doing google searches on osc and midi
and haven't found anything very informative.
