I'd like to show something like this to local students interested in learning Croquet -- allow them to import and also create their own models and motion.  I looked online and could only find a crippled version of Poser that times out in 30 days (http://downloads.e-frontier.com/us/user/poser_6_demo_product_12045).  A lot of the students know about Second Life and there would definitely be interest in using avatars downloadable from Second Life sites and following the directions to export into Croquet.  Is anybody aware of a free software download that would allow this?  Even @ $50 per copy of Poser 5, it becomes an expensive proposition to teach a "free" class with 20 copies of the software installed.  I tried Maya Personal Learning Edition and it doesn't appear to import poser / .obj file.  As Mark's blog suggests, expecting to "stop by Akbar and Jeff's Avatar Hut to pick up a mesh, skin, and animations to wear in any of the Croquet worlds" is a cool end point.  In the mean time, I'm trying to figure out what software to equip students with on a free software budget.  Any suggestions welcome.

  Thanks.

  Best regards,

I have used an open source modeling and animation software known as Blender on a few occasions, and I know it does have some support for .obj files. I'm not sure how good the support is, or how well this will work for you, but it may be worth looking at. It can be found here: www.blender.org

I tried a trail version of Poser 6, but it did not save files.

I was able to buy Poser 5 for $20, and at times I think non-Mac
versions may have been as cheap as $0. Alas, the last I looked, $50
was the cheapest that I could find. I can confirm that the $20 Poser
5 that I bought for Mac DOES produce files that work with Croquet.

I strongly agree with you, Dan, that some level off functionality at
$0 investment is important. If Croquet can read Second Life files
that have been zeroed by running them through Poser, then there is no
reason that it can't also read the Second Life files directly and do
the zeroing on import.  I think this is an excellent small
development project for someone to pick up.
